Those chart places are shocking. Considering there were only 3 channels at the time and these days with hundreds it regularly lands in the top 20, its quite odd to see them so low

They do seem particularly low, especially for the era. That said though, in TB's final two years ratings were slipping a fair bit

Saber is right. The last two series of TB in particular saw quite a dip, and the chart placings, although low, are not really unexpected given the circumstances. As you say there were only three channels then and the amount of television viewers was generally a lot higher back then, which means the ratings of 4-5m that Doctor Who was getting then was relatively low compared to todays viewing landscape in which 4-5 million would be an average to good figure. By comparison, Coronation Street which now averages about 1-2m more than Doctor Who, back in the 80's rarely fell below 17-20m. These days it gets about 8-10m which is still considered excellent because of the way people now watch tv with numbers more spread out

I didn't think the ratings were starting to get that low until towards the end of the Fifth Doctor era

I'd love to see how the papers try and spin these ratings based on how they deal with the current series. If they twisted the facts back then the way they do now its a surprise it lasted another ten years after this story.

I don't suppose ratings would have been such a big deal in the press back then, and even if they were the show wasn't the success it is now so they would have had no reason to try and knock it down like they do these days.
