Let's not forget the real central character of the story. This was one of the few occasions in the early days of Doctor Who that the TARDIS was more than a plot device. There's a definite hint that, as we've discovered now, she "cares" about the people that travel in her, although not in any human way. We also get hints about the TARDIS's heart, and the booming flashes that kept happening seemed to me like a forerunner of the Cloister Bell.

It's interesting based on what we know now and what the Doctor claims to know, that in this story the Doctor seems unaware that the TARDIS may be alive. Its something that I think they missed in the early stories but that I am glad has been more explanded upon since the show returned.

There were odd hints of it in classic stories. In Planet of the Spiders, the Doctor tells Mike he's going to leave choosing the actual landing place to the TARDIS because she's not a fool. Mike says, "You speak of her as if she were alive." The Doctor replies, "Yes, I do, don't I?" There are a few others, I think.
Maybe the Doctor's learnt more about the TARDIS the longer he's travelled. It's possible that the telepathic link has grown stronger, so he understands about her instinctively.

It's nice looking back to see a story that features the TARDIS more heavily. There is so much stuff that could be written about that thing that it could fill a whole series, so it's a shame it was mostly overlooked in the classic series I think.

Definately. In the new series it feels more like a character in its own right. They did touch upon in it in the classics but mainly it was just a prop

They did touch upon in it in the classics but mainly it was just a prop I would agree to an extent, however I think sometimes too much emphasis can be put on the TARDIS and the fact it is alive in the newer series. Episodes like The Doctors Wife work really well but I hate stuff like the clicky fingers and whatnot. (Although generally I just hate people clicking their fingers anyway, so that might have something to do with that.)
