An interesting thing that the Doctor mutters when he's delirious, which is never really explained or revisited. Does this simply refer to Susan not wanting to leave Totters Lane and Coal Hill, or does it suggest that she didn't want to leave Gallifrey in the first place? I think the latter is more likely - leaving London is still relatively recent, and I don't think it would have got down into his subconscious in that way.

I'd always just assumed he meant Totters Lane and 1963 London based on the fuss she kicked up about wanting to stay there.

My initial thought was also that he was meaning London, but it's an interesting thought about not wanting to leave Gallifrey. Based on that fact that that was never mentioned though I think it is probably the former.

There's a scene in The Sensorites where she gets quite nostalgic about home (that's where the "skies of burnt orange" are first mentioned). That doesn't prove she didn't want to leave, of course, but it certainly suggests she misses the place.

It's been so long since I have seen that story. I only ever watched once so I can't wait for the DVD. That is one of the few scenes that really still stands out to me and putting it into the context of this thread I can definately see how it would fit. I think in hindsight it could probably be applied to either, but I think at the time the writers were probably thinking about London.

I'd like to think it was Gallifrey. Even the Doctor, who was actually running from the place, must have felt a little sad or whatever that he couldn't choose to go back. It was home after all.

I think the good thing about it, like many aspects of the show from the beginning right through to present day, is that it is one of those things that can be left up to the viewers imagination. My belief is that he was talking about London in 1963 but Gallifrey doesn't make any less sense and would fit into the larger story just as well. It's because of things like this that I don't mind that not every single question is always answered. It gives the fans the chance to fill in some of the blanks and see the story or the history how they would like.
