I think half the problem (in terms of you saying about getting bored) is that Amy and Rory were around for too long.

I do think that is a BIG part of it. That's why I'm hopeful that Clara will mix things up a bit. I liked Matt more than ever in the Christmas special.

Matt Smith has said previously that Moff has pitched S8 to him and he can't wait. It could mean he can't wait to see it, not that he is in it, but I don't know why would tell him what was happening in a season that doesn't feature him. Also, if the rumours about a series rest in 2015 is true then I don't think it will be a good time to bring a new guy on board, whether Matt leaves at the beginning or the end of the season. It will either be a case of having one series with a new guy and then going on a break, and I am sure we all know how the papers would take that, or having a regeneration and then a break, which, like Colin Bakers start, could prove disasterous. I've a feeling Matt is going to do another two seasons (8&9).

But having Matt regenerate right before the gap would be fine, I'm sure. They wouldn't even need to show who the next face is, would they? They could just have him turn orange and cut to credits.

A couple of places are speculating that Matt will be announcing his departure at the Television Awards on Wednesday. I doubt it, but it's possible. I can't see him copying Tennant though. Or announcing something so soon.

IF they take a break (I really hope they don't, though) I actually would like seeing it done that way. It would kill me not knowing what happens next - what a cliffhanger! But I do think it could be done and done well.

I just really hope there isn't a break, lol

I don't mind if there is. Everyone thought the specials year in 09 was going to be horrendous but it wasn't so bad.

Until there is a confirmed report about him leaving I am just going to keep assuming that he isn't I've heard so many rumoured dates that he is going, 2014, the finale to S7, the anniversay episode, the Christmas episode etc. I think its just fans overreacting half the time.

He confirmed at the BFI that he is signed to 2014, so I would assume that is until at least the end of S8

But is that the end of 2014, as in another series, or could it mean the beginning, like a new years day special or something?

I've gone ahead and merged two threads together since both are discussing the possible departure of Matt Smiley

I think this is probably the safest bet. I don't think fans do it to fearmonger, but I think most are genuinly worried that he is going to leave and so look for people to say that he won't, but then others weight in with their 'knowledge'. Until we have something concrete to go on though it is all speculation.

Interesting question. Again though, until something concrete comes up we just don't know. I'm in no rush to see him leave so for now I am happy to let people speculate. The longer we go without an announcement, the longer we have him in the role.

This is official and is worth looking at. The last two panels are what is interesting. It could be anything, of course, but it looks like there is a place waiting for Matt's replacement

Most of the actors who come into the role tend to have a three or four year plan. I think after that they (and the audience) start to get fatigued and need a change. It probably is time for Matt to move on (for the sake of his career) and one of the most exciting things in this show is the speculation as to who would make a good Doctor and which actor will get it. There are some amazing actors who could bring a new dimension to the role. David Tennent left the public wanting more, I suspect Matt Smith may well want to do the same.

Apropos of this thread, it has been announced that Matt Smith will play in role in Ryan Goslings new film

Yes, I posted another report of that in the Doctor Who in the News section.  It could suggest he's leaving, or it might be that he has enough of a gap in the filming schedule to fit this in.

Some conflicting media reports on this...

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-02-08/why-i-think-a-doctor-who-regeneration-wont-be-too-far-in-the-future seems to indicate that MS is going to be off in the very near future

however....

http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/104551/He-Will-Be-Around-For-A-While-Yet-Matt-Smiths-Doctor-Who-Exit-Rumours-Dismissed

Whilst the second story has an optimistic tone in the title, the whole tone of the story is hedging its bets. I think we are certainly in the end game of the Smith/Moffat era and I suspect once the 50th Anniversary is done we will get some more concrete announcements

According to @blogtorwho on twitter, at the BFI screening of Tomb of the Cybermen, Steven Moffat said that Matt Smith is not going to leave the show, he is planning to be involved for a number of years to come and he will film in the US during the break in filming of Doctor Who.

If only this had turned out to be true.

I'm gutted he is going. I think one more season would have really cemented him in the role (though this alone may be why he chose to go now). I love Matt. He is the first Doctor I ever saw and I have become addicted to the show based on how good he is, so I am gutted to see him leave, but I know the new guy will be grand.
