As most of you will be aware, a few weeks ago we held a poll as to whether NuWho should be included in The Infinite Quest. Majority ruled and so the remaining stories along with everything from Rose through The Big Bang was included and rereandomised. The first story out was The Girl In The Fireplace.

Madame de Pompadour is being haunted by a stranger called the Doctor, but can he save her from the clockwork killers?

The Girl in the Fireplace was the fourth episode in the second series of Doctor Who. It was notable as Mickey Smith's first trip in the TARDIS. It won the Hugo Award for best dramatic presentation in short form for 2007.

While working with David Tennant on Casanova, Russell T Davies conducted research into the character of Madame de Pompadour and later decided to use her in Doctor Who.

Another influence on this story was the Turk, an 18th century robot. In reality it was a hoax, but Davies hoped to give it a sinister purpose. Due to its experimental nature, The Girl in the Fireplace was shifted in the running order from second to fourth.

The next story will be posted on Sunday November 6th

I was happy to have new stories included, but I have to admit coming in and seeing this was a bit odd. I'll get used to it, I'm sure.

Anyway, on with the ratings. I rewatched this last week so I'm not doing it again this week. I used to love this story but the more I watch it the more I find fault. While I still think the story is a good one, the impact of it has been sort of ruined by the fact that Moffat has begun using the plot device in most of his stories. It also sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of series 2. I don't like the Doctor/Rose romance, but this sort of made it all seem false. As a standalone story it's still quite enjoyable though I guess. Mickey annoys me throughout and I didn't particularly like Tennant in it either, but the sets and costumes were brilliant and the robots looked amazing. I'm going to give it a 3, but 3.5 is probably closer to what I think it deserves.

I've gone with a 4. I agree with Peri that the story feels a bit diluted now because of the constant timey wimey from Moff and I definately agree that it makes the Rose/Doctor ship look even more stupid, but I still can't help but enjoy it when I watch. I find Tennant to be pretty annoying in this one, but everything else works for me for the most part.

I was not particularly in favour of the new stories being included... but they are here now and the randomiser has kicked us off with an absolute gem. I really loved this one. I am - it must be said - a bit of an old romantic and this appealed to me. I do agree with Peri that this (especially after seasons 5 & 6) now has Moffat's finger prints all over it. But that said, it was a great concept, had everything about the show that I love. I also thought the ending was beautifully realised. It was worth a five if only for one of my favourite Who quotes "Here he is, the oncoming storm".

I went with a 5. Series 2 is by far the weakest I think and while I do like this story a lot I think it was dragged down by being part of a season that was a bit crap. That's not to say it doesn't deserve full marks and wasn't great in it's own right, but it doesn't really fit with the stories around it.

4 from me. It loses a point because Ten was near unbearable throughout. I am generally a fan of Ten, but I really didn't like him in this.

I have given this a four. I enjoy it when I watch and it is a good story but there are a few things in it that I don't like so much, the main one being that the ending and reasoning behind it all just didn't really work for me. Definately one of the strongest of the season though.

I've gone with a five. This was probably the strongest of the season and one of the strongest of the Tennant era. I'm not the biggest Tenth Doctor fan but I liked him here. The story was great and it all looked great too. Nothing really to fault it on.

Full marks from me this week. This is a corker of a story and for me personally there isn't anything wrong with it enough to take a point off. I definately agree it's one of the strongest of the season.

Also, it feels really odd not coming in to chat about a classic story. I like that the newer ones are included but it's a bit odd all the same Smiley

Just behind City of Death as the greatest Doctor Who story EVER! I absolutely love this story. It is lyrical, magical, funny, clever, with a truly tear-jerking ending. With so many quotable lines (only City of Death and maybe Genesis of the Daleks having more), great music, David Tennant's best performance, stunning attention to detail, I only consider Eve Myle's so-so performance an element that isn't successful.
