Patrick Troughton did an amazing job of taking up the Doctor's character, especially when you remember that rebooting the character was a completely untried risk.  It's criminal that so little of his era has survived, but this story shows his full range, from bewildered, to cunning, to wise, to childish.  I particularly love that scene in the military prison where he brazens it out just by being absolutely insistent about his right to be there - a trick most subsequent Doctors have used.  A very fitting swansong to his Doctor.

What a story to leave on. And what a cracking performance from PT. He always put in brilliant performances, even when the stories didn't match his capabilities, but he was particularly great in this. Probably because he knew he would be getting a well earned rest at the end of it Tongue

I can definately understand why he is so many peoples favourite, which is quite cool considering how much of his stuff is lost. Or perhaps it's because of that? Either way he has always put in great performances in what I have seen and this was no different.

While this isn't my favourite Second Doctor story, it is possibly my favourite Second Doctor performance. PT has it all in this story and gives every emotion you can think of and is brilliant at it. It's always good when the Doctor goes out on a high and he very much did in this story.

I can't think of a single time that I haven't liked a performance put in by the PT as the Doctor. Some of the stories that I have seen of his havent been so good (the Dominators springs straight to mind), but even then he was always great.

Not my favourite classic Doctor but he is always a great watch. It really is such a shame that most of his work on the show is missing.

I think that is one of the reasons why he is so popular. I think a lot of his popularity may be down to nostalgia. All of the other Doctors have a sizeable amount of intact serials to be judged upon, but PT has a lot less in comparison. I'm not saying his popularity isn't deserved, but it may not be quite at the heights it is if there were more of his work to judge, especially as most people won't listen to the audios and soundtracks.

I think he is great though.
