Now, I'm not saying one should be chosen over the other, but Sara Kingdom is always considered an official companion of the Doctor. She starred in 9 episodes of TDMP, filled the companion role pretty much exactly as we would expect and travels in the TARDIS. Castairs from this story fills pretty much exactly the same criteria and perfoms pretty much exactly as Sara did but is never thought of as a companion. Why do you think this is?

The distinction I'd make is that Sara travels extensively in the TARDIS - it might all be within one story, but she functions as an ongoing companion, not simply someone who helps the Doctor in a specific situation.

I have to be honest I didn't watch this thinking 'he should be classed as a companion' but I do think it's a fair point. Nyki makes a good point about Sara travelling in the TARDIS, but then even that is sort of blurry now with people like Jackson and Adelaide being classed as companions (according tot he BBC) when they didn't travel in the TARDIS either.
This might seem silly, but I think perhaps it is because he is a man.

Yes. I don't consider those one-off special guests as companions. Great characters, but not companions.

I think perhaps part of it is down to him being a guy, but I think that travelling in the TARDIS is a big part of it. People like Adelaide and Christina and the others are considered companions, but when it comes down to it they aren't really, are they? 'One off' companions maybe, or 'assistant' might even be a better term. Perhaps assistant would be a good term for Carstairs.

Yea when it comes to travelling the best he managed was a SIDRAT. Personally I don't think he should be added to the companion list, but I thought it was an interesting point to raise. I suppose it comes down to what you personally consider companion material though. The one offs are classed as such, but I think PPs distinction between companion and assistant is the best way to look at it because I don't class them as companions as such. There will always be disputes about these things. According to the BBC site (the last time I checked at least) The Brig wasn't even classed as a companion, but I would say he was more of a companion than say Sara or Katarina, who are on the list.

The Brig should definitely be considered a companion, and I'd personally include Yates and Benton too.

Absolutely - I think Brig, Yates and Benton were integral to the UNIT years and should definitely be regarded as companions

I'd say the Brig, for sure, but not Yates or Benton. They are more like companions of the Brig.
