I think perhaps part of it is down to him being a guy, but I think that travelling in the TARDIS is a big part of it. People like Adelaide and Christina and the others are considered companions, but when it comes down to it they aren't really, are they? 'One off' companions maybe, or 'assistant' might even be a better term. Perhaps assistant would be a good term for Carstairs.
