Steven Taylor was a former spaceship pilot turned companion of the First Doctor.

While a prisoner, during the events of The Chase, Steven built a wooden construction rather like a climbing frame to keep himself active. It let him climb up to the roof for fresh air. It was here, in his room in the Mechanoid City, that Steven met the Doctor and his companions, and soon after the Daleks. Upon seeing them, he asked, "Who won the war?" and introduced himself as, "Steven Taylor, Flight Red Fifty". Steven helped the others escape from the city, though he returned to retrieve HiFi. Steven fell from a great height when the Daleks destroyed the Mechanoid City. Luckily, he stumbled through the jungle and found the Doctor's TARDIS. Steven stumbled into it as the Doctor and Vicki were saying goodbye to their former companions, Ian and Barbara. Before the Doctor and Vicki returned to the TARDIS, Steven passed out in a dead faint. When Steven recovered, he discovered that the TARDIS had re-materialised in England, in 1066, and so began his travels with the Doctor.

Steven was often at loggerheads with the Doctor, finding him destructive and uncaring when lives were lost. When the travellers arrived in Paris, in 1572, Steven was disgusted by the Doctor's abandonment of his Huguenot friends and decided to leave the Doctors company when the TARDIS returned them to London in 1966, though he later decided to stay. Eventually, the experiences that Steven had on his travels led him to decide to use his skills and training to help rebuild a civilisation. When Chal invited him to help the Elders and the Savages live together, he decided to accept the challenge, and left the TARDIS.

I like Steven. I think he came along at just the right time in the show. Ian was on his way out and they needed the strong male character to do the things the Doctor couldn't, but at the same time I think he filled a space left by Barbara as well in that like her, he wasn't afraid to speak up and tell the Doctor he was in the wrong about something. He isn't the most memorable of companions. The guys rarely are, but I do think he was a good addition to the TARDIS, even if this wasn't one of his strongest stories.

Steven for me has always felt like one of those characters who was just there for the sake of having a guy around. He was acted well enough and he was a decent character, but there really wasn't much too him. In this story he just seemed uncomfortable from beginning to end

I like Steven and I like that he stood up to the Doctor a lot, but he was very much there for a purpose and not much else. He was the 'muscle', and as a result (though this isn't rare among any classic companion) had very little development or growth from his first appearance to his last.

I like Steven well enough, and he does show a good sense of comedy in this story.  I thought he and Vicki made a good pair, but I don't find him one of the more memorable companions.

I like Steven. He wasn't really given a whole lot to do but for me he was one of the better male companions of the classic era.

Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and The Doctor comes to call, everybody lives.

Steven was ok, but he always felt a little boring. There never seemed to be any excitement or adventure about him.

I quite liked Steven. As others have said he was only really there to be the braun and they didn't develop the character much beyond that, but I thought he worked well.

There was something about Steven that just didn't work for me. He always seemed a bit like he was holding himself back from thumping the Doctor
