This is the last story to feature individual story titles, but I think that was a bad move on the part of the makers. I like that even though there were umbrella titles for most of the stories, though not all, I like that there were individual titles as well. I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn't make all that much difference but I think it would have been nice to continue the tradition beyond this serial.

The story titles were never used, either onscreen or in the Radio Times. I think they were mainly a production thing, and a number of the early stories have several alternative titles. I like the individual titles too, but I can sympathise with them, as I can never think of chapter titles

I like the indivudual titles but I think they were right to do away with them. It's one thing remembering the names of 200+ stories, but with over 700 individual titles it would get ridiculous.

I think naming each episode would have been difficult. A lot of the times I think episodes were only written and put into the stories because they had a set amount that they needed to fill and as a result not a lot was actually going on in them. Giving them all names that didn't seem entirely pointless would probably have seemed like a bit of a task.

Not directly relevant to this, but I notice the next story (The Savages) was announced at the end of this as "Doctor Who and the Savages". I don't know if this this represented an error, or if they changed their minds about the format. By the next week, the story was billed as The Savages, and the only story ever to use that format onscreen was The Silurians.

I prefer the stories without the individual titles to be honest. I mean, they are fine enough, but nobody ever uses them and they just sort of go to waste. I'd even prefer for the two parters in the current series to just have an overall title as apposed to one for each episode.

Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair and The Doctor comes to call, everybody lives.

I think this is pretty much spot on.

Was there a particular reason why they stopped in the first place?

I haven't actually heard, but I suspect it was the difficulty of coming up with around 45 titles a year on an ongoing basis.

When did the novelisations start? Could it have been to tie in with them or something?

I think the first novelisation came out in 73, give or take a year or two, so I don't think it was related to that.

I don't think the episode titles make much difference either way, so losing them wasn't a big deal. It's the overall titles that people are interested in anyway.
