How well do you think the 'pure historicals' worked during the classic run? Would you like to see them return, or do you even think they could work in NuWho?

I liked the "pure historicals" when they were well done, such as Marco Polo and The Aztecs among others.  I'd love to see one included in NuWho - perhaps pulling the same trick as Black Orchid in the 80s, where it seems to be SF or fantasy, but isn't.  I suspect the current audience en masse wouldn't want it as a regular thing, though.

Some of them were done well and worked well on screen. Others didn't. Look how quickly An Unearthly Child went downhill after the initial episode, for example. The ones that were done the best were the ones where you didn't notice the lack of sci-fi in them, like The Aztecs. I'd like to see them give it a try on the new series but I know they never would. I think Vincent is probably the closest we got because for a chunk of it there was a chance that the Krafayis was just in his mind.

I don't mind them but I don't think the audience would take to them these days. Never hurts to try though I suppose. Maybe they will at some point.

Also though, it would depend on when and where it was set. It's easier to have a 'pure' historical in a setting where the details are a bit sketchy or where there is room for anonymous randoms in the story.

I'm having trouble explaining what I mean, but it makes sense in my head. Honest/

I just love historic set stories. I don't care if there is sci-fi or not, I'm just fascinated with anything pre my birth. I think that's why I love the classics so much, because most were made before that. I don't mind if there is sci fi elements, I just want more historicals in general.

I'm with Saber. I just love stories set in the past and I think historical stories are really lacking from the new series. We get usually one, but two if we're lucky, per season but I think more would be good.
