Without a doubt possibly one of the scariest 'monsters' the show has ever seen, and most of that is down to the creep factor of the little boy chasing them all around. That moment with the recording device thingy when they realise it's stopped and the kid is in the room with him still gives me shivers every time I watch. What's more impressive is that it's not a big out of space alien with 8 legs and four heads or whatever, it's just what at first glance would appear to be a person wearing a gas mask, not out of place during the war, but is just made to feel so sinister. I love it.

I completely agree about the scene you mention - even when I know what's coming, it's wonderfully creepy.

They were definately the scariest villain we had until the Angels came along in series 3, that's for sure. Kids are always creepy though. I still remember how shocked I was the first time I saw Victor Meldrews face morph into the mask thingy. What a great scene.

When I first watched the story I didn't really 'get' them, to be honest. I thought they were a bit creepy but I also thought they looked a bit naff. Now though, having watched it a few times, I like them a whole lot more and appreciate the simplicity of them.

They were very basic and simple, but I think that more often than not, that is exatly what works best in Doctor Who. When you take the ordinary or the mundane and give it a sinister twist it makes things feel a lot more scary. That's why these worked so well, imo.

I thought they were absolutely brilliant. Like Saber says, it's often the most mundane things that bring the biggest scares and I think that is what really works here. Add to that the little boy saying pretty much the same thing over and over, as though possessed and it really adds to the chill factor.

I read somewhere that the BBC were initially a bit worried about how frightening the Gas Mask People were and originally wanted the scene where Dr Constantine transforms cut from the story, but RTD convinced them to cut it. Not sure if that's totally right though.

Definately some of the creepiest villains we have had since the show returned. Probably only topped by the Angels' first outing in Blink
