Dorothy Gale "Ace" McShane, was a companion of the Seventh Doctor. She was a human from late 20th century Earth. She was a troubled teen on Earth, expelled from school for blowing up the art room as a "creative statement". Gifted in chemistry, she was in her room experimenting with the extraction of nitroglycerin from gelignite when a time storm swept her up and transported her to the deck of Sabalom Glitz's spacecraft, which was docked at Iceworld far in her future. Trapped on Iceworld, she got a job as a waitress and some time later met the Seventh Doctor and his companion Mel. When Mel left the Doctor at the conclusion of their battle with Kane, he offered to take Ace with him in the TARDIS, and she gladly accepted. Under the Doctor's tutelage, Ace fought the Daleks and faced Davros. She opposed Helen A and her sadistic government, which required people to be happy on pain of death. She stopped the Cybermen from getting hold of Nemesis in 1988 and saved the Psychic Circus on Segonax from the Gods of Ragnarok. She also met Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, helping UNIT defeat the Destroyer and Morgaine. The Doctor forced Ace to face demons from her past, taking her to a house she burned down a century before she did. There she discovered that the presence in the house of the Entity known as Light was what she had felt when compelled to burn the house down. Ace called the Doctor "Professor". She was convinced he needed his back watched and protected him with a fierce loyalty. In turn, the Doctor took a special interest in Ace's education, taking her across the universe and prompting her to figure out explanations rather than giving her all the answers.

I quite liked Ace in this, but I found her a bit wearing in some of the later stories. I think they tried a bit too hard to make her 'street'

I always liked Ace and think she was a great addition to the show, but whoever was trying to write her as cool or 'street' had obviously never met a teenager

I love Ace. I thought they got the right blend of genuine strength and vulnerability. And you've got to love a girl who attacks a Dalek with a baseball bat.

I thought Ace was great. In this and her other stories. It was a nice attempt at trying something different for the companion and for the most part I think it worked.

Wasn't Ace meant to come out in a lesbian if the show had been renewed for 1990? I'm sure that I read that somewhere. I can't say it would have been much of a shock. I always thought she was meant to be gay.

In terms of character though I just want to add I always like Ace, but I think she was particularly good in this story. Well, except for walking around the streets with a beat box. Honestly, who does that!

From what I have seen of Ace I generally don't mind her, but she did my head in in this.
Oh, and definately a lesbian. I've always thought so.

This is the first story I have watched with Ace and I don't really know how I feel about her. I don't dislike her, but she didn't stand out to me the way I thought she would based on what I have read about her on here by the fans. I guess if I was rating her she would get a 3.
