Mary Whitehouse complained so much about the scene of the Doctor being drowned that the BBC re-edited the scene on the master copy in case it was ever shown again (though it's been restored now from overseas copies)

I've not read the book but the original film is excellent. Angela Lansbury, especially. The remake was ok, but not as good.
