Dr. Martha Jones (later Martha Smith-Jones after marrying Mickey Smith) was a British freelance alien hunter who began her career as a medical student before becoming a companion to the Tenth Doctor and later a medical officer with UNIT. She was also attached briefly to Torchwood 3.

In 2008, Martha was working at the Royal Hope Hospital when it was transported to the Moon by the Judoon. Calm while those around her panicked, Martha worked with the Tenth Doctor, posing as a patient named John Smith, to track down the Plasmavore, "Florence Finnegan", the Judoon were searching for.

As the oxygen in the hospital ran out, Martha gave her last breaths to resuscitate the unconscious Doctor, who had thwarted Florence's plan. The Judoon returned the hospital to Earth. That evening, a recovered Martha was approached by the Doctor, who revealed that he was a Time Lord and invited her to join him on a trip through time and space in the TARDIS.

Martha was a friendly, intelligent, brave and good-spirited woman. When she was a prisoner of the Daleks, one of them confirmed that she possessed high intelligence. The Doctor was impressed with her theory about having air on the Moon, and he asked her to join him in the hospital balcony to see if they could breathe.  Although the Doctor asked more of her than any other companion (watching after him while he was human, walking the world for a year), she rose to every challenge.

Martha quickly developed a crush on the Doctor and always wondered if he even noticed her. Martha was envious of Joan Redfern when the Doctor made himself human and fell in love with her, and said he "had to go and fall in love with a human, and it wasn't me".

In The Year That Never Was, Martha admitted that she loved the Doctor, but after the Master's defeat, she decided that holding on to the hope that he would return her feelings was not good for her. She was later engaged to Tom, and for unexplained reasons married Mickey Smith instead.

Although she had cause to be jealous of Rose Tyler, Martha seemed genuinely happy for the Doctor when he and Rose were reunited. She got along very well with Donna Noble. Martha also had a good relationship with Captain Jack Harkness and did not mind when he flirted with her.

I love Martha. She gets such a bum deal but yet again she was brilliant in this story. I like that towards the end the Doctor started to open up to her a bit more. Let's face it, he pretty much treated her like crap.

I agree about her getting a bum deal, but in this story her only real purpose was to get kidnapped and set the story up. She didn't really do much else.

I think that was important for the character, though. Up until this point she had pretty much been disregarded by the Doctor. He pretty much says as much here. It takes her being taken for him to realise that he has spent his time just 'showing off' to her. The thing is, even though he begins to open up to her here, it still takes a few more episodes before he is fully accepting of her being there. I think that's half of the problem with her. The Doctor took ages to take to her and so as a result I think fandom did, too.

I always liked Martha.  I think she suffered a bit from being the second companion running to fall in love with the Doctor, but I never felt she was just Rose v.2.

I'd agree. I liked Martha a lot, but I was over the whole 'companion loves the Doctor' stuff before Rose even left so to go through it all again with Martha got really boring. I love that it was resolved differently though and she grew from it as apposed to just pining or running away from it.

I love Martha. She never gets enough love but she is brilliant. She didn't have an awful lot to do in this story but she played a vital part in it and that's what's important I guess.

I'll never understand the lack of love for Martha. I'd take her over Rose, Amy or Rory any day.

It had the opposite effect on me. The more the Doctor pushed her away and acted like a douche towards her, the more I disliked him. By series 4 I was so over Ten.

Martha is my favourite companion and I love her in every appearance. As others have said, she didn't have a lot to do in this episode but what she was there for was important. I think she is a great character and played really well. I think the problem most people had is that she wasn't Rose. Much like when Matt Smith took over from Tennant. Some people just find it harder to let go and move on,  I think.
