Amelia "Amy" Jessica Pond was the first companion of the Doctor in his eleventh incarnation. She was the girlfriend and later wife of human nurse Rory Williams and the mother of River Song. When River married the Doctor, Amy became his mother-in-law.

Amy was adventurous and reckless, with a dry wit and a stubborn streak. She had a difficult childhood and felt abandoned by the Doctor; she was rarely open with her feelings and often mistrustful and wary. She held people she cared for at arm's length, as she did in her early relationship with Rory and the Doctor upon his return. As a child, Amelia was stoic and able to care for herself. She prayed to Santa Claus for help with the crack in her wall and was unsurprised to meet the Doctor. She lusted for the adventure of travel with him. When he did not return, she grew into a cynical and aggressive young woman.

Amy was flirtatious. In Leadworth she worked as a kissogram. At one point she tried to seduce the Doctor and Rory claimed she only passed her driving test on her first go because of a revealing skirt.

Amy loved her husband, Rory, passionately and called the Doctor her best friend. Her bond with him was almost religious. She felt he could fix anything. Despite her tough exterior, Amy could not always hide her emotions and was devastated when faced with the loss of loved ones such as Rory, Melody, the Doctor and Vincent van Gogh. She broke down in tears when the Doctor left her on Earth with Rory.

In her time on the TARDIS, Amy was heroic, saving the lives of the Doctor, Rory, River and others. She was willing to remain in the clutches of the Silents to let her friends escape. Her mind, altered by her growing up with a crack in space and time in her bedroom wall, restored erased beings to the universe with only her memories. She knew time could be rewritten and hoped there was some way to rewrite it to avoid the Doctor's death. She could also remember alternate timelines.

Amy could also be cruel though; she certainly had a ruthless streak. In an alternate timeline, Madame Kovarian was being killed by her eye drive and had gotten it most of the way off; she asked Amy to help her because it was what the Doctor would do. Amy said "He's not here" and put Kovarian's eye drive back on, killing her for having stolen her baby from her, though she was later conflicted about this.

I don't think this episode really gave a fair representation of Amy in series 5. She was shouty in the first episode, kind and thoughtful here, then back to shouty again afterwards and for the remainder. I've always been a fan of hers, though admittedly I like her more in the latest series. I don't think though that this story helped fans warm to her because although it showed her in a positive light, it was also really inconsistent.

I really like Amy in this episode, but for the majority of series 5 I really wasn't keen, so I sort of agree with TC

Yea, I'm with the others. Amy was ok here but for the majority of series 5 she was written pretty badly and unevenly. Moff kept on about how she was a typical Scot, but as a Scottish woman I can say she definately wasn't, if there is such a thing as a 'typical Scot' beyond some dodgy stereotypes. I think they made a vast improvement with her in the following series.

I didn't mind Amy too much. She got a bit shouty at times but so does everyone. She wasn't always well written but I do think that Karen played her well. I liked her in this story more than I did in The Eleventh Hour, even though that story is far superior to this.

I always liked Amy - I liked her having a bit of aggression.  I do think, though, it was right that the initial OMG-I'm-travelling-in-time thing in this episode would have got rid of the aggression for a while.

I really wasn't keen on Amy throughout Series 5, but this was definately one of her better episodes. I don't think it was down to Karen Gillans acting, as many have said in the past, I just think she was written really badly.

For me it wasn't really until the last scene of Flesh and Stone where I started to dislike her. Where she pounced on the Doctor. With the reintroduction of Rory in the following episode came the worst sides to her character. From then on she was written awfully. They turned it around in the last series but even then she still had moments where she was really annoying. And don't get me started on the missing baby/lack of giving a toss. The writers really dropped the ball there.

This was pretty much the only story in series 5 where I didn't want to punch Amy in the face. She grew on me a lot in S6, but she was a dreadfully written character during series 5

I agree with you here. Really glad they improved her so much in S6

I think the biggest issue most people had with Amy is that her attitude was so far removed from what most people were used to or expected. The last time we had a companion groan so much was Tegan, long before many fans started watching and not the most popular of companions to be compared to. Amy grated on me throughout her first year but at the same time I understood why she was the way she was. Looking at her life story, or what we know of it at least, her bad attitude sort of makes sense. I think Moff was trying to tell a complex character story rather than just say 'let's have a shouty companion'.

It wasn't so much her shouting, it was her coming onto the Doctor and cheating on her fiancee that I didn't like about her.

I still don't understand Moffs justification for writing that in there.
