It seems odd to me that so far into the future, a time when we had already been told they were more sexually liberal and in a story where a cat person is in a beastial relationship with a human woman, that RTD would write in the line about a lesbian relationship being seen as too 'modern'. Especially from the cat person. I don't have a problem with it, it just seems a really odd line to write in. Surely lesbians would appear more normal than a human woman giving birth to kittens.

I suppose the big shocker though is that with all that going on in a story, it still managed to win a Christian Society Of America Award Grin

I can't say I ever paid much mind to that particular comment. It may have been a bit out of place if you think harder about it, but I think it fit Brannigans character.

As for the Christian award, that is a bit of a surprise. It didn't feel particularly religious in tone to me and it does have stuff in there, rightly or wrongly, that you would expect them to complain about rather than reward.

Maybe having hymns sung outweighs mixed marriages and lesbians Cool

That was my thought too. The hymns seem to be the only thing relating to religion that I can think of from the episode.

The thing is, just because the world is supposedly a more liberal place, doesn't mean that everyones attitudes are. Maybe the cat race is still a bit slow in coming around to lesbianism or something.

Maybe it was the message of hope. For that literal light at the end of the tunnel. The whole episode was about believing that there is something better. The Highway was essentially the middle ground between life and death. God's waiting room, if you like, between the dark depressing world they left behind and the big old shiny heaven they were heading to. The Macra could then be seen as some sort of hell? Like a sort of purgatory or something.

Never really thought about it before so that might all be a load of bollocks, but I suppose it would kinda fit.

That actually sounds like a really good answer. And probably the most likely, too.
