I always like the First Doctor best when he has some comedy to play with, and there are elements to this story, especially early on, where I think he is just brilliant (especially the shot of him inside the Dalek). Even with the comedy aside though, I think William Hartnell put in an excellent performance in this story. He doesn't often get the credit he deserves but when he was on form he was absolutely brilliant.

I agree that William Hartnell did comedy brilliantly. It's a shame he isn't really remembered for that, though. The scene of him popping out of the Dalek shell with a little giggle is one of my favourites.

I did like him in this. I always do. But there was something about him in this story that just seemed really distracted. I don't know if it was to do with his age or health or maybe even just the way he was playing it, but there were times were he just seemed miles away.

I sort of agree with this. He seemed on fine form at the beginning, but it was later in the story he seemed to come off a bit lost in himself. Maybe it had something to do with his holiday right in the middle of filming. Perhaps he was ill rather than it being prearranged.

I love his mischievousness in this, especially when he was teasing Lobos with the mental imaging device.  And the Dalek, of course.

That scene always makes me laugh. He giggles like a naughty schoolboy

I thought he was perfecty scatty in this. He didn't always seem completely with it, but I think that adds to his character, rather than detract from it.

I agree with this. I think William Hartnell was lucky in that it didn't matter how much he seemed off or made mistakes or whatever, because rather than making him seem incapable, it actually added to the character.

I thought the Doctor was absolutely brilliant in this. You could tell that Hartnell was in his element with the comedy moments there.

The Doctor was the best part about this story for me. I don't think what was written for him was particularly funny, but he played it in a really funny way which is what made it so good.
