What was going on with it? I was expecting the first episode to end after 20-25 minutes and it just kept going. when did they change it? I've only ever seen shorter episodes during the classic run. Even the later stories were shorter. Was it just this one? Why did they change it at all?

It only lasted for season 22, though I have no idea why they did it. The number of episodes were cut but the length of them was extended and so they evened out, but the following season everything was cut. That time because of Michael Grade.

I think the extended length was just to see if it could bring viewers back. I suppose they thought it would be easier to keep the audience for one 45 minute block instead of two seperate shorter blocks. It obviously didn't do the trick though because after this season the show was cancelled, though that got overturned to a hiatus of 18 months.

I think this is a likely explanation. It was still sold abroad in 25 minute episodes so it was something they did for UK broadcast only. I'm not sure if an 'official' reason was ever given, though.

I've just had a look to see if there was anything of note about it online, but the best I can find is that Alan Hart (who was the head of the BBC until 1984) wanted to 'experiment with the length'. It may have had something to do with being moved opposite The A-Team, which was a 45 minute show, but that's just me guessing.

I liked the longer episodes, but I think it made the stories feel shorter. Two parters in the classic series, regardless of episode length, just feel so much shorter, even if this was essentially the same as a four parter. I know we get one parters these days but it's standard and feels normal. For the classics it was more normal to have several episodes. I rambling, but it makes sense in my head.

I'm sort of with Aneurin. I think I would have felt cheated over the length at the time. I know it amounts to the same, but it feels shorter. If they decided with the new series to make 7 episodes of 90 minutes we would be getting the same in terms of minutes or whatever, but because we would only be getting 7 episodes I would feel short changed.
