Harold Saxon becomes Prime Minister, and his reign of terror begins. But his dark ambitions reach beyond the stars...

The Sound of Drums was the twelfth episode of the third series of Doctor Who. It marked the first full appearance of John Simm as the Master, disguised as Harold Saxon.

This episode gets a 4. I liked the aspect of the team being on the run and I enjoyed Simm being maniacal as the Master (Something they overdid in TEOT imo, though it was the writing more than the portrayal). It did well to set up the finale which I think ultimately didn't live up to the episodes before it.

I think this series of episodes is one of my favorite.
After becoming a general fan of DW, I started looking up things relevant to the old show, and of course I found about Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master. The Master was the only one that I hadn't seen or heard of, so, naturally, I was curious. I went on watching, and, sure enough, Utopia was three down from where I had been.... And I nearly fainted when Yana revealed himself as the Master. Then, actually being able to see the Master in action...
I'd be hard-pressed to rate this as anything other than a five.

3/5.

Wasn't as bad as the finale but wasn't as good as the first episode. Nothing really stands out about it.

I always think that in many ways the penultimate set up story of the RTD eras were some of the best stories. Think about it; The Stolen Earth (with a cliff hanger the likes of which I haven't seen before), Bad Wolf, Army of Ghosts - all cracking stories with an amazing set up. I think The Sound of Drums is equally as fine and provides a great lead in to the season finale. 5/5 again from me!

This one gets a 4. It wasn't as strong as Utopia but aside from comparing it to that I think it was a good standalone episode, as far as you can call it standalone, that is. I liked the stuff with the Master in the Cabinet meeting and I also really like how they made Tens TARDIS all evil looking and red for the Master.

I think VA is right. We have had several instances where the setup episode of the 2-parters have been far better than the second episode. This is the case here, but not by very much. This is one of the most consistent of the two part finales for me in that there doesn't feel like a huge drop off in quality. It could be that RTD had it out of his system by the finale though because neither of these episodes is as strong as Utopia. I've given it a 4

I'm going for another 4 for this episode. I think it followed well from the previous story as well as setting up the finale. Some of the Masters scenes were a bit overdone for my liking but other than that I don't have many complaints with it.

I'm giving this one a 5 as well. There are a few bits to it that I am not so keen on. I thought it overdid it on the music and the clichéd 'Oh look, the Americans are trying to take over again' scene, but for each thing I didn't like so much there were touches that I thought were absolutely brilliant. The Gallifrey scenes were particularly good and the Master in the cabinet meeting doing his smiley/grumpy face impression makes me laugh every time.

Four from me.  A pretty strong episode, although I didn't like the beginning (why not just start with them escaping from the future, as there was no real purpose to putting it in a flashback?)  I did think Simm was particularly good as the Master in this, and extra kudos for the Teletubbies homage to The Sea Devils.

I've gone with a 4. I agree with Nyki that flipping the scenes at the beginning was pointless. It would have felt like more of a continuation had they made the story more fluid. The stuff with the Master in the Cabinet meeting was great but other than that his characterisation annoyed me in this (though moreso in the following episode).
