Three songs were number one during the time this was on the air.
You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers had it's final week of 4 weeks at number 1 She Loves You by The Beatles returned to the top spot for 2 weeks (of 6 total) and became the best selling single of the 1960s I Want To Hold Your Hand by The Beatles began the first of 5 weeks at the top spot

17th November? The first episode was transmitted on the 23rd. Yep that's right, but for every story we put in here we put the weeks they aired, Sunday through Saturday. This began on the 23rd so it's the week's from 17th November onwards. It's how we do it for every story. It also makes it easier for the one parters from the newer series because they only technically air for one day, so again we go from the Sunday before transmission to the Saturday of the last/latest transmission.

Four films were number 1 at the box office.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World The Incredible Journey Fun in Acapulco Charade
I've only heard of the first and last, and only seen the last.

Was the show originally due to transmit on 22nd but was moved to 23rd because of the assassination of JFK? I seem to recall there was some shenanigans with the original transmission date moving because of the impact of the assassination.

And Aldous Huxley. Was the show originally due to transmit on 22nd but was moved to 23rd because of the assassination of JFK? I seem to recall there was some shenanigans with the original transmission date moving because of the impact of the assassination.
I don't think so. My recollection it was trailed for Saturday all along, and everything I've seen since suggests it was always intended for that slot. Incidentally, it's odd that I vividly remember both hearing about JFK (the cliché's true - I remember what programme we'd switched on to see and got the newsflash) and watching the first episode of Doctor Who, but it wasn't till around ten years ago I was aware they were consecutive days. 24 hours are a long time when you're a kid.

It was always meant to air on the 23rd but it got a repeat because of the low ratings it got competing with the news about JFK
