There used to be a lot of debate about the naming of the first couple of stories. This one is probably more commonly known as An Unearthly Child but it's also been called 100,000BC and to a lesser extent The Tribe Of Gum. What do you call it and what do you think is it's rightful title?
I always go with An Unearthly Child. It doesn't really sum up the story as a whole but it's definately the better of the lot when it comes to titles. It was also the first thing I ever knew it as so I guess it stuck.

I call it AUC because that's what's on the DVD (like with DWM suddenly calling Series 5, Series 1 and expecting everyone to follow suit) but I guess it's rightful name is 100,000BC. They did sell it as that to other countries, after all.

The only time I ever hear this (or any other story for that matter) referred to under another title is in DWM who are determined to go with their own system, like OWO mentioned they do since Moff took over with calling series 5, 6 and 7 series 1, 2 and 3, which makes no sense to me at all. I call it An Unearthly Child like it says on the DVDs and in pretty much all the literature.

At the time, none of the stories were given overall titles either on screen or in the Radio Times, so it was most often referred to as "the one with the cavemen". I always call it An Unearthly Child - that seems right, as that episode's the best bit.

I don't understand why there are title debates to begin with? How many stories exactly are debated?

My Series 6 Ratings (so far): TIA 10/10 | DOTM 10/10 | COTBS 8/10 | TDW 10/10 | TRF 9/10 | TAP 10/10 | AGMGTW 10/10 | LKH 8/10 | NT 4/10 | TGWW 10/10

As far as I know there are only three stories where the titles are questioned and I think it comes down to different sources claiming different things because they were never given 'official' titles, just post/pre production umbrella titles that were never used outside of the shows production notes. That doesn't really make as much sense as I would have liked.

I call it An Unearthly Child and I think that is the best title of the bunch. DWM are the only ones who ever use anything different and I think that's just because Tom Spilsbury wants to be different rather than any real reasoning. No title is any more right than the other but AUC us what 99% of people know it as.

I go with whatever it tells me on the DVDs. I don't see any reason why it should be called anything else.

I don't think AUC really gives a full idea of what the overall story is about so it's not the best title in the world but at the same time I do think it is the 'proper' one.
