So what are your thoughts on The First Doctor in this story?
I'd seen later First Doctor stories before this so I was already quite warmed to him but I was quite taken aback by what a grumpy old codger he is in this. It's a wonder people took to him at all. I always say to people when I know they are watching this for the first time to try and ignore how cantankerous the Doctor is because he mellows so much and becomes so much nicer along the way. I think they learned early on that they needed to soften him up and it obviously worked because by the time he came to leave he was especially popular with the youngsters.

I like how grumpy he is. He's a lot calmer than I would be if two people pushed their way into my home without invite. I mean, I probably wouldn't kidnap them for two years but I understand his lack of patience with them in the beginning.

I think watching this when you are unfamiliar with the First Doctor can sort of cloud your judgement but if you stick with it and see the development of the character it's far more rewarding. I think the First Doctor is the most overlooked of them all which is a shame because I honestly think he is one of the best, but this isn't the story to show him in his best light.

I have to be honest, the first time I saw the First Doctor I wasn't keen at all. I got the Beginnings set and watched them and he just came off like an angry fool. The more I watched though the more I warmed to him and the more I saw him warm to everyone around him. They developed the character so well over his time in the role and you can really see the difference. It also makes you appreciate the character more when you rewatch the older stories, I think, because you sort of understand his overall story more.

I think if you are watching his stories in order then he does take a bit of getting used to but he is definately the one of my favourites and probably the most unsung of the lot. Tom is remembered for his lengthy tenure, Colin is remembered for his 'awful' era, Sylv got cancelled on etc. Hartnell started it all but it seems he is the most easily forgotten for most people, which is a shame.

I'm with OWO. I like how grumpy he is. It's not exactly unjustified. I also think it adds depth to the character and I like that they never tried reasoning it, he just was. It was good to see the way he softened though and felt every loss of a companion that much more than the last. The affection he had for Vicki and Dodo especially was really nice. Susan could have been all but forgotten after she left but the fact they played it that the Doctor was always sort of looking for a replacement was a nice touch.

I like the way the story arc of series one was essentially Ian and Barbara becoming accustomed to the Doctor's way of life, while they socialised him. He never lost his grumpiness, but we started to see his charm and compassion coming out too.

This is my first First Doctor episode, and blimming heck does he scare the life out of me! I don't know, just something about him freaks me out! Yes he's a little grumpy, and quite old... but the main thing I find is he's scary! Definitely do not like him! But I shall stick with it!
