Overcrowding In The TARDIS

There has been debate in the recent series with Amy and Rory and the Doctor that the TARDIS is overcrowded and there should just be one companion with the Doctor, but as we see here from the very beginning of the show the Doctor had multiple travelling companions and it, in my opinion, worked really well. What do you think is best and what do you prefer?

I don't mind either way, really. I think with the faster pace of todays series we often see one of the companions, usually Rory, being sort of sidelined. There are other times though, The God Complex being one that springs to mind, where multiple characters work really well in the same short space of time. I think in the classic series it was easier to have multiple companions because there was more room to develop them within each stories multiple episodes.

I think given the choice I would prefer to have more than one companion (though not romantically linked) but I don't think it makes a huge difference to the story either way and I definately don't think having more than one 'overcrowds' the TARDIS.

I agree.  Some of the show's greatest periods had one companion, and that works fine, but I enjoy it when there's interaction between two or more companions.

I prefer to have multiple companions. I think it makes the stories more rounded because they can show it from different POVs. The Ganger 2 parter from last year worked really well as an example because we had three people with very different views on the situation and how it should be tackled while at the same time spreading the story out further so we had Rory off doing his thing, Amy and the Doctor the same. One companion is fine, Donna is an excellent recent example, but I just prefer to have 2 or even 3. It works well I think and doesn't ever feel like too much.

I don't really mind just having one companion but I've never had a story where I have thought that the TARDIS is overcrowded. Multiple companions, when treated equally, work really well I think. If I was writing the show I'd have two companions.

I think three is the perfect travelling number. The Doctor and two companions is how I like it. Although you can't argue with the fact that some of the best companions have been solo. Jo, Sarah Jane (mostly), leela, Rose, Donna etc.

I don't think the TARDIS has ever been overcrowded but I also don't have a preference to how many companions the Doctor has with him as long as he has at least one.
