This week's Have I Got News for You did a bit on the Daleks being "retired" - they suggested they'd all be going off to old-people's homes and sit around reminiscing about when they fought the Doctor.

I'll have to iplayer that - don't watch HIGNFY anymore.

The copy of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' I read was the film tie in version & in an interview in the back Sam Rockwell mentions having seen a little bit of H2G2 along with Doctor Who as a kid.

There was a Cyberman in the episode of Supernatural I watched last night. They were talking about 'man-droids' and the camera focused in on a magazine with a Cyberman on the front

Little exchange that popped up on p 137 of 'First Among Sequels' by Jasper Fforde:

"'And you are here now ... because?'
'Landen said he'd videotape Dr Who* for me, & the Daleks are my favourite.'
'I'm more into Sontarans myself,' said Miles.
'Humph!' said Joffy. 'It's what I'd expect from someone who thinks Jon Pertwee was the best Doctor.'
Landen & I stared at him, unsure of whether we should agree, postulate a different theory - or what.
'It was Tom Baker,' said Joffy ending the embarassed silence. Miles made a noise that sounded like 'conventionalist', & Landen went to get the tape."

That's the second time I've noticed Fforde directly reference the show & I've noticed other things that could be nods to it. Starting to suspect he may be a fan  Smiley

Oh, and if you're interested it transpires that the recording was of 'Remembrance of the Daleks.'

*Not me mispelling the title of DW - that's how it's written in the book.

I was watching Dead Set yesterday and Doctor Who was one of the things they listed that they would miss now that the Zombies had taken over

As a regular Radio 4 listener <cough>YESI'MGETTINGOLD<cough> I've noticed that there's rarely a day goes by without someone, on something, mentioning DW.  Must be the most frequent indirectly plugged thing on there.

The award-winning afternoon play, 'Every Child Matters', which they repeated a few weeks back, had a scene where a disgraced social worker is talking to her former colleague (and lover), and he mentions if only they could turn back time...and she says if he could do that, he'd be Cher...and he says no, he'd be the Doctor and take her away somewhere in the TARDIS.

And I laughed when there was a reference in The Archers where Jill Archer was in the newsagents telling someone how much Freddie (Pargeter, her grandson) liked a particular unnamed magazine 'because it's about his favourite TV show - he loves the robots and monsters....' they didn't say which TV show but, well, you know. Grin

There have been various things on Woman's Hour (I think) and some other programs...can't remember, but I'll pop on here if I hear any more.

Watching the (rather abysmal) Improvisation My Dear Mark Watson on Dave, they began improvising a sketch based on Doctor Who, until Rufus Hound demanded that it be stopped because Doctor Who is just too important to mock.  Cool

Another Radio 4 mention today.  You and Yours was looking at the Harry Potter movie and talking to some of the crew who worked on it, and they asked one of the costume guys how he got started, and he said his first job was on Doctor Who.  Pity I didn't catch his name, could have looked him up...

SFX Magazine are looking to collect references to Doctor Who on TV or the radio that occur between Saturday 9th & Friday 15th July 2011. They want:

• Jokes involving Doctor Who in sit coms and comedy shows (we can almost guarantee one in The Now Show every week)
• Casual references by presenters to, “It’s just like A TARDIS.”
• Mentions of Doctor Who in dramas
• Questions about Doctor Who in quiz shows
• Any random plays of Doctorin’ The TARDIS on music radio
• Use of the TARDIS sound effect when something needs to appear out of thin air…
• Random use of the Doctor Who music

Full information & details of where to send any references can be found here: http://www.sfx.co.uk/2011/07/06/doctor-who-spotting-week/

And don't forget to tell us if you see/hear any too  Smiley

Two mentions in two consecutive episodes of One Foot In The Grave the other day. One where Margeret described something as looking like an alien from Doctor Who and the other was when Victor had a glass accidently glued to his forehead and said he looked like a deformed Dalek

Today's Radio 4 afternoon play was 'Best Interests'.  It was about what happens when a young man collapses at a tube station, gets taken into hospital, and decisions about his care turn awkward because it turns out he has learning difficulties...but he's also a Doctor Who fanatic, and there are a lot of familiar references.   It's still on BBC iplayer for the next week if anyone's interested in listening.

There was also a reference the other day to an art exhibition in an ex-nuclear bunker in Bosnia, and someone described said bunker as being like the TARDIS.

You can't escape it, can you? Smiley

Bit oblique this one but a DW reference nonetheless.

Brisingr, page 204:

"Arya signed a stop to the sentence she had been writing on the ground. Bending over, Eragon read, Adrift upon the sea of time, the lonely god wanders from shore to distant shore, uphlding the laws of the stars above.
'What does it mean?'
'I don't know,' she said, & smoothed out the line with a sweep of her arm."

She returns to randomly writing on the ground again on p 207:

"With a flourish, she completed the latest sentence she had been working on. He tilted his head & sidled closer in order to decipher the glyphs she had inscribed. They read: The trickster, the riddler, the keeper of the balance, he of many faces who finds life in death & fears no evil; he who walks through doors.
'What prompted you to write this?'
'The thought that things are not what they appear.' "

I've got to admit if I'd just read it without knowing I probably would have missed it. Christopher Paolini makes it clear in his acknowledgements though:

"Also for those who understood the reference to a 'lonely god' when Eragon & Arya are sitting around the campfire, my only excuse is that the Doctor can travel everywhere, even alternate realities.
Hey, I'm a fan too!"

Today's University Challenge had a music round consisting of pieces of Murray Gold's music from Doctor Who, and the contestants had to guess which character's motifs they were.  I'm afraid I didn't get any right  Undecided
