Ok, so I got to wondering when this story was set and there didn't seem to be anything official about it, just a brief mention of something called the 'UNIT Dating Controversy'. What exactly is it? I always thought UNIT were just a normal Earth operation so why would there be a controversy about dating their stories? I tried digging further but didn't turn up much except for really long winded paragraphs that didn't really explain anything. Anyone know for sure what it's about? Is it an in-story thing or more a continuity thing?

There was always the assumption with the original UNIT stories that they were set a few years in the future, and there were various hints - eg the TV programme in The Daemons was on "BBC3", which didn't exist at the time, while in The Android Invasion, Britain has a manned space programme. The only definite date given was in Pyramids of Mars, which was broadcast in 1975, where Sarah Jane says "her time" is 1980. However, in Mawdryn Undead, the Brig refers to retiring in 1977, which wouldn't make sense. People take different attitudes about which is the correct dating system. I'd say the later dating generally makes more sense.

I think sometimes it is easy to get lost in the dating, especially if you want to show that you are arriving in different years or whatever, but they could have kept some sort of track on events, surely. A bit of contradiction is understandable, but so much? Really? Seems quite sloppy.

I agree. The change came during the JNT era, and I feel he sometimes changed things deliberately to have them his own way. It's one thing to get mixed up with the Daleks' chronology, but this should have been fairly straightforward.

I can just imagine how mad the fans would have been about this if there were internet forums at the time. It's bad enough now. I tend not to try to apply too much logic to it. If a date is mentioned in a story then I'll just accept that and not try to line it up with others. I find it's the best way.
