But 6m seems about average for the show. I know it climbed a lot during the 70s but it spent most of the 80s at around 6m. This was around the time when they announced putting the show off for 18 months, so why then if the ratings were consistent?

And if this was the lowest performing story of the season it means all the others were better received and rated which should have worked more in the shows favour.

6m might have been more acceptable if they didn't know by this point that they could pull in crowds of 12-13 million. The problems though were that Michael Grade was a pillock and that JNT turned into the unwelcome aunt who visits for a weekend and never leaves. If someone had wrestled the reigns from him then the show could have been salvaged.

Not quite sure what to make of these viewing figures. Given that the UK only had 4 TV channels they seem a little low (though even in this 900 channel nirvana that we currently inhabit, i bet its the same type of viewer who watch now as watched then).

The AI figure seems a little on the low side - I mean I don't want to be critical of the data but even some of the weaker offerings in season 6 of Nu Who were punching out AI in the 80s. Are we really expected to accept that this was 20% less well-received than the new stories?

I wonder how much promotion there was at the time for PT's return. You'd have thought that it would have got at least some sort of boost rather than falling in the ratings.

I don't imagine there would have been much tbh. I might be wrong, but it seems a bit like the BBC were trying to hide Doctor Who at the time. I wasn't old enough to watch it first time around though so I may be way off

And the reason for that (aside from the show being awesome) is because even with 900 channels there's still never anything good on
