The TARDIS arrives on the unnamed planet of the Gonds, who are ruled and taught in a form of self-perpetuating slavery by the alien Krotons – crystalline beings whose ship, the Dynatrope, crash-landed there thousands of years ago after being damaged in a space battle.

The Krotons are at present in suspended animation, in a crystalline slurry form, awaiting a time when they can be reconstituted by absorbtion of mental energy. Periodically, the two most brilliant Gond students are received into the Dynatrope, apparently to become ‘companions of the Krotons’ but in truth to have their mental energy drained, after which they are killed.

When the Doctor and Zoe take the students’ test, their mental power is sufficient to reanimate the Krotons. The Doctor discovers that their life system is based on tellurium and, with help from the Gond scientist Beta, he is then able to destroy them and their ship using an impure form of sulphuric acid.

I do hope they put more extras on. There doesn't seem to be much so far. I know PP said there should be more but they have said that before and then not added any others.

I've never seen this but I've seen pictures and it makes me think of The Dominators. Is it at least better than that?

Commentary will be provided by Gilbert Wynne (who played Thara), Philip Madoc and costume designer, Bobi Barlett. Toby Hadoke will moderate.

It's a considerably better story, but the Krotons themselves are a bit crap visually.

Not a favourite of mine but it will be good to see it cleaned up with some decent extras.

This story has the distinction of being the first story written for Doctor Who by Robert Holmes. Its a good little tale but the realisation of the Krotons is not the best. But a great watch nonetheless.

I can deal with crap visuals. It's the crap stories that bore me. The Dominators was a huge disappointment.

I've just rewatched my crappy taped-off-TV copy, and I found it even better than I remembered, other than the Kroton design.  My only real objection is an almost universal one in TV sci-fi - the planet's entire population apparently lives in one village  Undecided  Anyway, it has Philip Madoc in it.  Not quite as iconic a performance as the War Lord or Solon, but brilliant as always.
