So this is where we got to meet Martha's extended family. Personally I pretty much hate them all, but what do you think?

They were awful. Really awful. The brother and sister were sort of tolerable and to an extent I understand why Francine is such an overbearing bitter cow, but generally they just weren't a likeable bunch (besides Martha).

They were probably some of the least-pleasant characters ever to appear on DW. I think the only one I could stand was her brother. Tish was alright sometimes, but she never seemed very bright. But her parents (especially her mum) drove me crazy. Once we met Donna's mum, I was afraid I was gonna have to go through it all again, but once she leveled out, I just quietly went back to despising Francine.

If it had just been them appearing in this as a background for Martha, I wouldn't have minded, but I think they underline that you need a seriously good character, like Jackie or Wilf, to keep pushing the companion's family in the viewers' faces.

Between the Doctor telling her every ten minutes that he didn't want her there, the awful unrequited love story and this dreadful, dreadful family, I can't help wondering if RTD hated Martha Her family were so bad. Just... so bad!

Her brother was barely in it and her sister seemed like a dim idiot. Her parents were dreadful.

I think this also. No one could accuse RTD of hiding Wilf away yet we lapped him up. I would have happily seen him in the TARDIS every episode. The problem was that while Martha's family were 'edgy' and 'cool' they were also deeply dislikable and relatively one dimensional. Not only didn't we know anything about them, we didn't want to know anything about them!

I have to be honest I wasn't keen on them. They weren't particularly nice characters and they weren't always written very well but most of the stick I have seen aimed at them in the past seems to be directed towards Francine for the fact she doesn't like the Doctor and doesn't trust him. I think it is easy as fans to think he is a cool guy but perhaps we would have a similar mindset if some alien came and whisked one of our kids off to god only knows where. She may have been a bit unpleasent at times but she was also a woman who was looking out for her daughter.

I completely see your point here. What really gets me is that she was trying to get him caught, even though she knows he's her daughter's friend. And she seems a bit too thick to see that they won't just leave Martha out of it. If it hadn't been for her dad (who redeemed himself a bit here) yelling for her to get away, things would've went very sour.

They didn't come off well in this but in fairness I think it was later stories where they appeared worse. Especially in The lazarus Experiment. I think they went down a similar route with Sylvia in series 4, but for some reason, for me at least, I think she came off a lot more likeable.

I agree with above. I hated Sylvia at first but then they redeemed her in later stories but without majorly changing the character. Martha's family just got worse as time went on.
