Melody "Mels" Pond, later River Song, was a "child of the TARDIS". She was human with Time Lord DNA, conceived by her parents, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, onboard the Doctor's TARDIS as it travelled through the Time Vortex. This gave her the potential for great strength and regeneration, to pilot the TARDIS and understand complex principles of Time and Space.

Melody was stolen from her parents as an infant by Madame Kovarian to become a weapon of the Silence in their war against the Doctor. After her second regeneration, she killed the Eleventh Doctor, but then broke her mental conditioning to give her remaining regenerations to revivify his corpse.

The Doctor and her parents left her to make her own way in the universe. With no connection to her family or the Silence, River became an archaeologist, ostensibly to track the Doctor through time. She crossed the Doctor's path on several occasions, generally with the result that she was meeting him at progressively earlier point in his own time stream. Hoping to avoid temporal paradoxes, the Doctor gave her a diary to keep track of their meetings and to prevent her from revealing "spoilers" to him about his own future.

Again forced by the Silence, she made a second attempt on the Eleventh Doctor's life. Though actually unsuccessful, she was convicted of his murder and spent many years in Stormcage Containment Facility for it — apparently to convince the universe that the Doctor actually was dead. This confinement was made more bearable by escaping frequently to go on out on dates with the Doctor.

Ultimately, she died saving the life of the Tenth Doctor in the Library. That incarnation of the Doctor saved her consciousness digitally to the Library's computer system, granting her a form of theoretical immortality.

I knew River was coming back for this story and I was so excited for her return. I loved her in the library episodes and was interested to see what they would do with her. I know people moan about her storyline and I am the first to admit I didn't want her to be the Doctor's wife, but I love her character and the bulk of her story. I just hope she sticks around.

I had no idea this was coming. I had a moment where I went "Wait, what?" and had to rewind the episode to make sure it was really her. I thought it was magnificent that they followed up on this foreshadowing, as I assumed it wasn't going anywhere.

Knowing River was coming back in this series was almost as exciting for me as the new Doctor and companion showing up. Almost. It certainly didn't disappoint. That scene at the beginning with her strutting around in her heels was so camp, so over the top and soooo awesome!

I'd never even heard of River Song before this episode. It was only after this series when I did my 1-Specials watch that I found out about what had come before, so unlike many others I didn't prejudge or have any sort expectations for seeing her but I loved her from the moment she came on the screen. And those shoes! I still need to own a pair.

River Song's a great character.  I don't think I've failed to love any of her appearances, and I'd put this one near the top.

I really enjoy River Song - she brings something different to the party and in Alex Kingston they have a larger than life actress who can really give it "full hammer" (as we used to say back in Moss Eisley). Tom Baker always said (quite affectionately I thought) that the best guest actors are those who come on and "do a turn" rather than try too hard with the acting - and I think this is what Alex does as River.

And sometimes, when i'm feeling a little sad and lonely, I imagine her playing a scene with William Hartnell. And all is well with my world.

I love the way Alex plays River. You can write the best character in the world but if it isn't the right person playing the part then it won't work. She was brilliant in this story and, for me at least, gets better every time she appears.
