Romana II

[Peri-Peri]

After her regeneration, and in her new incarnation, Romanadvoratrelundar (or Romana for short), continued to travel with the Doctor until she decided to remain in E-Space.

Romana decided to regenerate into a form identical to that of Princess Astra. The Fourth Doctor protested that she had no right to assume the likeness of another person, so she went briefly through other alternative forms, only to settle back on Astra's. She also initially chose a style of dress that mimicked the Doctor's. The Doctor soon got accustomed to her new form. He found this new incarnation easier to get along with than the last, to the point where he implied that he considered her his best friend.

This incarnation of Romana seemed to respect the Doctor more. She also seemed to have settled into her name. She was fearful upon occasion but remained quick to react. She often showed her personality through her quirky style. Romana regularly donned a pink version of the Doctor's coat. She also wore a number of dresses, carrying on her previous incarnation sense of style.

[Saber]

Romana was ok in this. Not the best outing for her but she had some great lines and she was acted well enough.

[Exterminate]

She was ok I guess. Never was a big fan of Romana II. She wasn't bad in this but she did nothing to stand out either.

[Kovarians-Eye-Patch]

Romana II isn't one of my favourites by any means but I do think she was one of the saving graces in this story. She didn't have a lot to do but she was given good dialogue and acted well throughout. I liked her in this.

I like Romana II and I though she was great here. She did however have trouble masking the fact at times that things weren't exactly peachy with Tom Baker. She at times would give him looks like she wanted to slap him

Weren't they still together/married at this point though?

Going by things Tom Baker has said in interviews it was over pretty much before it started and behind the scenes there was always lots of arguing and stuff on set. I don't know how bad it got but many people working on the show at the time has said that final year was pretty frosty.

I think Romana II was always better when she had something clever to do, as she does here, rather than just being the cute assistant - it gives her more of the authority that Romana I had.

There is something about Romana II that I don't like, but I just can't put my finger on what it is. Actually, it's not so much a dislike, I think she is an ok character, but there's just nothing there that I have seen so far that makes me go 'wow' like with most companions.
