Season 23, commonly known under the umbrella title of The Trial of a Timelord, began airing after a forced 18 month hiatus on September 6th 1986 with The Mysterious Planet, running for 3 months and ending on December 6th with The Ultimate Foe. The series marked the departure of Nicola Bryant as Peri in Mindwarp, while new companion Mel was introduced during Terror Of The Vervoids. Colin Baker was sacked as the Doctor between seasons making the final episode of The Ultimate Foe his final appearance as The Doctor. This series saw both a cut in episodes and episode length with the four serials making up 14 episodes of 25 minutes each. The series faced many problems during production, most notably after the death of scriptwriter Robert Holmes and the resignation of script editor Eric Saward. Although viewing figures were down for this series, the audience appreciation was significantly higher than most other series of the classic run, with the majority of episodes receiving a 70 or higher.

Hard to split them up when they are all so linked but of the four stories there I think The Ultimate Foe is the best part.

Very difficult to choose just one, but I've gone for Mindwarp - lots of shouting from Brian Blessed, and a spectacular exit for Peri (before it was spoilt)

I've gone with The Ultimate Foe. Overall it's a decent season but when broken down you can really see the weak links.

A very strong season with all of the stories fitting well within the overall story arc. Mindwarp and Mysterious Planet both strong stories (the later representing Robert Holmes last contribution in a long and illustrious career).
But for me personally, I think Terror of the Vervoids was Colin Baker's finest performance as the Doctor and I thought him and Mel were brilliant in this story and it was all underpinned by a brilliant supporting cast and a nice "Who-Dunnit".
Given the behind the scenes chaos that occurred during the writing of this season, it is a miracle that season is as coherent as it turned out to be!

I've not watched all of these and the ones I have seen have been out of order, but I enjoyed them enough. The one I liked most though was The Ultimate Foe

My vote has gone to The Ultimate Foe. They all have their good points. Well, perhaps not TMP, but I like the final installment the most.

Not really a huge fan of any of them but I guess the best of the bunch is Terror Of The Vervoids
