There will be no new TIQ next week, so this is the first of three stories added to tide you over until I am back from my jollies Smiley

Mars, 2059, Bowie Base One. Last recorded message: "Don't drink the water. Don't even touch it. Not one drop..."

The Waters of Mars was the first Doctor Who special not tied to a particular holiday. Mostly a character piece, it showed the extremes to which the Doctor would go when unregulated by either other Time Lords or companions. It continued the "He will knock four times" story arc begun in the previous episode.

It won a 2010 Hugo Award for writers Russell T Davies and Phil Ford. After years of stability at the producer's office, The Waters Of Mars was the fourth episode in a row to be produced by a different person.

Remember, no new stories next week so the next new one will be posted on Sunday 24th June Smiley

I'll start the voting off with a big ol' 5. The only thing that makes me want to mark it down is that it wasn't an Ice Warrior story. I thought it was creepy and well written with some great characters. I could have marked it down for Ten being such an ass but I think it sort of made sense, as much as I didn't like it.

5/5

This was the only one of the specials I really loved, and it was a great episode. Very chilling!

I very much enjoyed this story. I thought the way that whole thing was pulled together and the overall concept was very good. The story rattles along at a fair old pace and as Joshua says, very chilling in its execution.

The only thing that stops me giving this a 5 is that I didn't like the ending. I thought the resolution required a little too many leaps of faith (I shouldn't be here says Adelaide Brooks so then she tops herself... I didn't get that from the character) and also the dismissal of the two people by the Doctor was too fundamentally against his character. I just could never see the Doctor of Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, or Peter Davison or Sly McCoy dismissing anyone as unimportant. I appreciate that was the point that the writers were trying to make but it just doesn't work for me. The Doctor could no more do that than he could kill them. So I knocked a mark off for the incongruous ending. But still, a very enjoyable story: 4/5

Definitely the best of the specials but also a great story aside from that. It was character heavy and in those types of stories you often find some of them are underdeveloped or not very fleshed out but I think everyone had an important part to play. I think Ten was a bit OTT but other than that I liked it a lot. Full marks.

4/5 from me. An awesome story let down by the last ten minutes where it all sort of went off the road.

I think The Waters Of Mars was one of the creepiest stories we had had in the show in so long, and for that alone it wins points from me. NuWho has tended to stay away from creeps and scares for more family oriented, lovey dovey stories and I think that's a shame. The classic series, for all it's faults, had a way of getting under the skin and being creepy while at the same time staying suitable for all ages. I think the new series misses that in a lot of stories. One of the biggest strengths of this story is that it didn't give us a happy ending. It's just a shame though that it instead gave us Ten being a douche. I've given it a 5

I think this story is great by any standard but it really helped to boost the specials year. Planet of the Dead was good but TND and TEOT are both dreadful stories. I think that fact alone really helps to make this stand out, but I think the story was really good and there were some good characters in there, even though I think a couple were ultimately overlooked. I've gone with a 5

This is the only one of the specials I actually like. I remember I hated it on first watching... I found it so boring, but it has definitely grown on me over my several rewatches of it. I love the idea behind it. It seems so simple yet really scary. Still, like others have said the ending is rather a let down. I don't love it and I don't hate it. I think the whole killing yourself is a bit extreme (especially for a programme that kids are watching) so that knocks a mark off for me.

4/5

I gave it a five.  I did consider taking a point off for the ending, but I'd say that's less than 0.5 and the rest is awesome.

This is getting a four from me. Mostly I enjoy it but I like it less on rewatch I found myself liking it less. Not totally sure why but it just wasn't working as well for me.

The best of the specials for sure, but it didn't live up to the hype for me. I've gone with a three.
