K-9
« on: June 24, 2012, 08:34:35 pm »

K9 Mark I was built by Professor Marius to accompany and assist him in his work at the Bi-Al Foundation. He served as the template for all future versions of K9.

When the Fourth Doctor and Leela arrived at the Foundation, they took a liking to K9 and he was eventually given to them by the Professor as a thank-you for defeating The Swarm. From then on, the Doctor saw the robot as a good friend. After a number of adventures with Leela and the Doctor, Mark I decided to stay on Gallifrey with his "mistress" Leela.

K9 was often left behind in the TARDIS and so he saw journeying out as a treat. He stated that to wish was to have emotion and so he wished for nothing. Despite this he regularly showed emotion, even sulking when shouted at. The Doctor described him as overbearing, arrogant and insufferable, after K9 told him there was only a 1% chance of the Doctor having a better explanation for something than him.

The mechanics of K9 Mark I included rotating ear-probes, telescopic 'eye' probe, extendable nose, flashing lights on the top and the 'eye' panel, waggling tail antennae, and ticker-tape tongue. The head could also move up and down. The shell was painted in gold/grey metallic. Around K9's neck was a tartan collar, from which hung a silver disk.

I don't think he was any more annoying than normal. In fact there were some scenes with him being a bit cheeky that I really liked.

There is something about K9 that I really, really dislike but at the same time I still find him oddly adorable

K9 always wot best for me when he is being a little cheeky like he is in a lot of his scenes in this story. It's something they really played on in his reappearances in SJA. He could be annoying at times but I didn't mind him in this and I don't really mind him in general

I always liked K9 (at least when he was being played by John Leeson).  I think the "annoying" thing is an aspect of his character, but I never find it makes him annoying to watch.

K9 was ok. I've not seen too much of him in Doctor Who but I have never been really annoyed by watching him or anything. He isn't a great vharacter but he's watchable

What I love about K9 is how naff he is considering he's supposed to be 50th century technology or whatever. He can grate but he's easy enough to watch.

I think K9 is cute. I don't understand why people find him annoying. From what I know the prop was a nightmare to work with but as a character on the screen I don't see anything wrong with him.
