Romanadvoratrelundar (or Romana for short) was a Time Lady who was forced to be the Fourth Doctor's assistant in the search for the Key to Time during her first incarnation.

The White Guardian assigned Romana to assist the Fourth Doctor in the quest for the Key to Time, appearing to her as the Lord President of Gallifrey. Though she was much younger than the Doctor, she considered him an academic inferior. The Doctor was initially unwilling to take Romana along and hostile to her.

They found the first segment on the planet Ribos in the form of a lump of Jethrik. They had to recover it against the will of Graff Vynda-K. During this time the two bonded. Romana came to respect the Doctor for his experience despite his academic failings.

Though a young and relatively inexperienced Time Lady, Romana was extremely bright and capable. She had taken a triple first at the Academy. The Doctor had scraped through with a minimal passing score on his second attempt, information Romana cited to put her achievement in perspective.

Romana was an exceptionally clever (on par with the Doctor) and slightly bossy person. She shared many of the Doctor's traits. She was haughtier and more "by the book" and was occasionally annoyed by the Doctor's eccentricities. However, she was naive about things outside her experience and occasionally made unwise choices. Like the Doctor, Romana preferred to think her way out of situations, but was not opposed to force when necessary. She shot a guard to protect others, an act that momentarily saddened her.

The Doctor threatened to call her "Fred" if she didn't let him call her "just Romana". She chose "Fred", but the Doctor proceeded to call her Romana anyway.

I love Romana I.  She was a completely different sort of companion and had a different dynamic in her relationship with the Doctor.  Romana II had her moments, but I much prefer the original.

Romana I was always my favourite of the two. Romana II became a bit too much like the others but this one had a personality all of her own!

I've always been a fan of the Dynamic between the Doctor and someone who thinks they're better than him, but none of those situations compare to the first conversation between Romana I and Four. Quite the enjoyable experience Cheesy

Hmm. I'm not sure. She was annoying, but in a likeable sort of way. I need to see more.

She just did this season, right?

I think I was far superior to II. She was better written and better acted and just and all around better character. It's a shame she didn't stay longer.

I'm not sure which one I like most. I think it depends on the serial. Both were written well and both could act but both could be really annoying at times.

How appropriate that we should be reviewing and watching the Ribos Operation with the sad news of the passing of Mary Tamm. She was such dignified presence and had a 'film star' glamour about her. She was a wonderful actor and brought fabulous quality to the show.

I agree. I prefer Romana I more I think but mostly because she was the original and I liked her dynamic with the Doctor more, but I think both had their good and bad points.
