K-9
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:02:25 pm »

K9 Mark I was built by Professor Marius to accompany and assist him in his work at the Bi-Al Foundation. He served as the template for all future versions of K9.

When the Fourth Doctor and Leela arrived at the Foundation, they took a liking to K9 and he was eventually given to them by the Professor as a thank-you for defeating The Swarm. From then on, the Doctor saw the robot as a good friend. After a number of adventures with Leela and the Doctor, Mark I decided to stay on Gallifrey with his "mistress" Leela.

K9 was often left behind in the TARDIS and so he saw journeying out as a treat. He stated that to wish was to have emotion and so he wished for nothing. Despite this he regularly showed emotion, even sulking when shouted at. The Doctor described him as overbearing, arrogant and insufferable, after K9 told him there was only a 1% chance of the Doctor having a better explanation for something than him.

The mechanics of K9 Mark I included rotating ear-probes, telescopic 'eye' probe, extendable nose, flashing lights on the top and the 'eye' panel, waggling tail antennae, and ticker-tape tongue. The head could also move up and down. The shell was painted in gold/grey metallic. Around K9's neck was a tartan collar, from which hung a silver disk.

K9 has the cuteness factor but I think bringing him back as MkII wasn't really needed.

I like K9, but I found the whole mark 2 a bit random, especially the Doctor apparently having a spare K9 kit in the TARDIS (though that wasn't in this story).

You mean like to build his own?

Where did K9 even come from?

The original K9 was built by Professor Marius, a 50th century scientist, in The Invisible Enemy.  He was working on an asteroid and couldn't have a dog with him, so he built his computer as a robot dog.  At the end of the story, he was going back to earth, so he gave K9 to the Doctor and Leela.  It certainly wouldn't be beyond the Doctor's abilities to build a copy, but there's no reason there'd be a kit.

I think this for me is when K9 started to overstay his welcome. Having him around didn't make a lot of sense and there was nothing about him that added to the stories.

I don't mind K9. He wasn't totally needed for most of the time but he was ok when he was around.

I find him mostly annoying. I don't understand why they bothered keeping him around, especially with Romana. He wasn't needed in the stories.
