Deliberately left open, but RTD said in his book his intention was that she was the Doctors mother. What are your thoughts?

I've heard some people say she was Susan but I think if that were the case they would have got Carole Ann Ford in, who has said she would love to return, and I also think it would have been played very differently. I like the idea of her being his mum though. I don't suppose it makes all that much difference either way though.

I definitely don't think it's Susan but I am happy to think it's his mum. I don't think it's that important because she doesn't do an awful lot, but I think the biggest intrigue comes from the fact it's not revealed rather than actually caring.

It wasn't said on screen but as said in the OP it was said in the book that it was intended to be his mum and that's a good enough explanation for me.

The first thing I ever read about it was that it was Susan. At this point I hadn't seen any classics and so bought into it. Since watching the classics I don't believe it to be Susan. I think it's his mum. Or a random important person from his past. But not Susan.

I think it's his mum. I don't doubt that part. But I don't think her appearance was needed. Because of that I think it's a good thing that she wasn't named on screen. As it was it was easy to pass her off as a concerned random Timelord but I think naming her as his mum would raise far too many questions that couldn't be followed up on once the Doctor had regenerated.

Who she is aside, this just felt like another thread of the story that was jammed in but made little to no sense and wasn't given a proper explanation. I don't mind things being left open or mysterious, but there was no point to this.

My original thought watching it was that it was Romana.  Susan would have made sense, too, but his mother's a bit random.  In any case, I have an idea the Doctor's said at some point that his parents are dead.  Possibly in Tomb of the Cybermen.

I agree the thread didn't entirely work.  For one thing, it was never really resolved, and for another, the way she was making Wilf see her doesn't seem to fit with any power the Time Lords have been shown as having before.

It never even occured to me that it might be Romana. Which is odd really, given that I'm usually one of those fans who thinks that everyone is Romana. I'm currently wondering if maybe Clara is. Either that or the Rani Tongue

I love the idea though. I think it fits better than Susan or his mum, which up to now had been my top theory. I agree though that whoever it was, their appearance didn't make all that much sense.

But isn't Rani really the Rani? Cool
