I had really never thought about the Thals - but that would be brilliant! And it would give her a unique relationship with The Last of the Time Lords!

I suspect she won't look too different from standard human, if they do go for an alien.  A Thal would be absolutely awesome, but it's true her hair-colour makes it unlikely.  There've only ever been five alien companions (as opposed to diaspora humans like Leela and Jack) and they've all been indistinguishable from human.

I'd love a Silurian, but I suspect they'd have brought Vashtra back if they were going there.

I would also add into the mix an alien along the lines of Kes from Star Trek: Voyager. She had a lifespan of only 9 years so that would make a fabulous contrast with the long life of the Doctor and give a new perspective (and also new peril perhaps - 3 years imprisonment wouldn't affect you or me, but it would be a third of her life).

I don't think Kes worked too well in Voyager (especially how she ended up) but I think with a slight alteration, a true alien with a limited lifespan might throw an interesting dynamic.

Star Trek has plenty of inspiration for a companion, could also look to:

Seven of Nine:  A companion who used to be cyborg (*cough* 'cyberman') but was separated to recover their humanity
Spock/Tuvok: A human-looking race that shows no emotion and embraces logic
Garak: A seemingly innocent tailor, but you know he has a chequered past, lofty connections and his finger in far too many pies...
Q: An omnipotent presence who can cause planets to explode by clicking their fingers.  May not work well as a companion though...
Klingon: A noble warrior race that distrusts anyone else.

Personally, I can't see a Klingon on the TARDIS would work, but the top 3 above all have possibilities...

Personally, I think I'd prefer a person from Earth's future (say, the Fourth Bountiful Human Empire) to an alien companion. Although, I'd much rather have an alien companion to a modern-day companion.

If they were to ever go with an alien companion I think it would be great. There is an episode of SJA, the name escapes me now, where we see Rani as an old woman and they show her as normal Rani meeting a red alien girl. Something like that would work well I think. Perhaps a red person would be hard to explain walking down Oxford Street but what I mean is that she looked human with some interesting clothes and extra makeup. No heavy prosthetics or CGI, just alien and interesting looking. Should be easy enough to do and lots of potential background stories to tell.

Or something more subtle and hideable, like Spock's ears.  BTW, the episode was The Mad Old Woman in the Attic.

Perhaps a telepath or an empath - that would make for an interesting relationship with the Doctor?

That would be really cool. A companion with powers of their own. I like it.

I would just like to see a move away from the "Rose-varient" that Nu-Who seems to have as a staple (Donna Noble being the notable and rather wonderful exception to this). Don't get me wrong; Rose and the other companions have been amazing. But we need a change - we need a different type of companion. I confess that I never really gelled with Amy (I always thought that a more interesting show would have been the Doctor and Rory in a "buddy movie" type of thing with Amy as the third wheel).

I am dosed with optimism though - Jenna Louise Coleman is a very good actress and her time in the soaps means that she is no stranger to drama. If the relationship with Matt Smith is as Sparky as The Moff suggests then we should be in for a treat.

I thought I'd give this thread a little bump given that we have seen JLC act in Doctor Who (and what a marvellous debut it was as well) and her debut as Oswin has got us all thinking just how will she be introduced. As I see it there are three main options (with slight variations):

1. She is no relation to Oswin and she will be a completely different character

2. She is a relative of Oswin but in a different time

3. She is Oswin

Now if Moff goes for option number 3, then this itself has a number of variations:

a. This occurs before she boards The Starliner Alaska and the Doctor knows she is going to die (but then how did she not recognise him? So this is unlikely)

b. The Doctor goes on board the Alaska and sweeps Oswin away to safety

c. Oswin somehow manages to escape from the exploding Asylum and re-humnaify herself

I have no idea which one this will be - but my hopes are still high for JLC as I really liked what I saw in Asylum Smiley

She really did do a brilliant job. I hope she's exactly the same as she was in Asylum, I think she'd be my new favorite companion.  Smiley

One thing that does occur to me is that the Doctor never actually saw her (except as the Dalek casing) so he's not going to recognise her as the same.  Though maybe her voice will sound familiar.

She saw him though, so if she doesn't mention that then maybe we should assume she is up to something. Assuming, of course, that she knows about/remembers those events.
