I've just been thinking about this. There've been three real Auton stories (OK, TPO/TBB had Autons in it, but it wasn't really an "Auton story") and every one of them has been an "introduction" story too. Spearhead From Space was the closest thing they ever did to a reboot during the classic run. Terror of the Autons introduced the Master, Jo Grant and Mike Yates for the first time. Rose rebooted the series as NuWho. Is it something about the Autons?

Maybe it's just to creep people out further?! That every day things can be dangerous? If that makes any sense! Not sure how to explain.
Guess it just saves throwing a new audience in at the deep end with Daleks or Cybermen and introduces alien stuff gentler?
In the case of Rose it introduces Autons as I guess they're an obvious every day object and with Rose working in a shop it would make the audience feel more able to relate to what the characters were going though?
I probably made no sense there!

Until next week when S7 launches, the Autons (along with the Daleks who will get their fourth with Asylum) are the only race to open three seasons. This is perhaps a 'random fact' but I think it's interesting that they are high up on the 'go to' list. It would be interesting to get a full blown mid season Auton story I think, that doesn't act as any sort of introduction.

Oh my god Karen, you can't just ask someone why they're white!

I think Hannah is right. They are easy to identify with and that makes them creepier. It's also a good way of merging old and new together without the new audience feeling alienated.

I love the Autons. I have no idea why they used them but I was glad they did.

I didn't know that the Autons were in it until I watched and I was really happy with that. I don't know why they seem to be the 'go to' villains but it seems to work. I wonder if RTD did it purposely or if it just ended up as a coincidence.

When you think about the appearances of the Autons I think it becomes evident just how underrated they are. They've never really had a bad outing up to now. In fact, I think all of their stories have been great. They do need to have a good proper story now though where they are the focus as apposed to to in the background of someone elses introduction.
