I think this would have been perfect as an actual prehistoric dinosaur story (with a rejigged plot, obviously) without the need for all the scifi. I know the show shies away from historicals, especially pure historicals but those graphics were amazing and can you imagine seeing them running around in the wild in a proper dinosaur tale? It would have been great. It won't happen, I'm sure of it, but I would love some pure historicals back. Dinosaurs are awesome. They didn't need to stick them in a spaceship to get them on the screen.

I might just be being a dumbass here, but what exactly is the difference between a historical and a pure historical? Wouldn't they both just be set in the past?

I might be off on this, but I think historical is used for stories that are set in the past but have a sci-fi element added in somehow & pure historicals are just that - the TARDIS team visiting a historical period & just getting involved in or observing events - no sci-fi involved (beyond the time travelling Doctor obviously!)

Ah right, that makes sense I guess.

In which case yes, I think having them land in the past and having to deal with the dinosaurs would have been an awesome idea.

Maybe they could reuse the technology and do that next series.  I'd love that.

And yes, it would be great to see one or two pure historicals again.

I've said a number of times in the past that I would love to see a pure historical on the show again. I think they could do it really well and I think the audience would really go for it because with the show as it is today it would probably seem a huge novelty to most regular viewers who don't know it was common in the early days. A prehistoric dinosaur story would have been awesome.

I think a lot of the pure historicals are lost and the ones that are left aren't the better ones, however I would like to see them try it again. There are a million stories that can be told and I think it would go down well. We don't get enough historicals as it is imo.

The Aztecs and The Romans are two of the great pure historicals, and both survive.  The one that's a massive loss (any missing DW is a loss, but some more than others) is Marco Polo.  Of course, the last pure historical was Black Orchid, though I'd regard the 20s as "period" rather than "historical".
