I have to be honest, I think the weakest part of this story was the whole thing with the cubes. They appeared, pretty much did nothing, the Doctor waved his Sonic and then everything was right in the world. The whole alien plan behind them was just sort of stupid and ill thought out.
What I think would have been cool would have been to have them appear and get the world talking and worried and wondering but ultimately have nothing happen. They are just weird black, probably alien boxes. It could be explained by the Doctor as some weird out of space phenomena and we could have had the episode with all the character stuff, the debate amongst the Ponds, the introduction of Kate, the Doctors revelation about why he keeps going back etc, and the cubes being the setup for it all but with nothing ever coming of them, leaving fans to debate their appearance and existence for hundreds of years.

Me too. The best bits of the story was the character driven stuff. If this had been used as a catalyst to get them to open up, but ultimately led to nothing I think it would have had a far greater effect than the ending that we were given because that bit felt a bit tacked on.
