Something that occurred to me today about this story - why didn't the TARDIS get transported with the Earth?  I think I just took for granted at the time it's because the TARDIS is outside time and space - but that's only the inside.  The outside is a physical object that exists in a specific spacio-temporal location in order to provide a connection between the interior TARDIS and the outside universe, so that object should behave like any other on the planet and get transported with it.
