This is the thread for discussion of the overnight ratings, the official ratings, audience share, AI, iPlayer hits and anything else to do with ratings for this episode.

The initial ratings, share and AI will be from the UK, though these may be expanded upon later to take into account figures from elsewhere in the world such as the US and Australia.

If you want to see how this episode rates in comparison to previous series, then you can find that information HERE. Please feel free to discuss the ratings and share your thoughts on how well this episode is doing. For ratings relating to other episodes, please check the relevent threads.

If you need any help understanding how the ratings and AI is calculated, then feel free to ask and either a moderator or fellow member will advise you.

This episode had 7.59 million viewers and an audience share of 33.9%

In bald terms that is the fifth most watched programme of Xmas Day (which is impressive enough). However, given the (frankly shameful) time slot of 5:15pm, and as it is expected that either Doctor Who or Downton Abbey will break the "Time Shift" viewing record, I think this will be viewed as an exceptional performance given the positioning of it in the original schedules. (Especially as Strictly Come Dancing - the show that was obviously given precedence over Doctor Who achieved only a 33.3% share of the audience).

I think the timeslot knocked a few mil off, however this is a hard one to call on Christmas Day because most people just sit around all day anyway so I think that normal timeslot arguments may not apply. I think timeshift and iPlayer stats will be interesting to look at, and it has been number 1 on iPlayer since Christmas Day which is good, but unfortunately those figures aren't counted in the finals. The other thing to look at though is that every Christmas Day regular was down over last year. Eastenders, Downton, Corrie, The Royle Family have all dropped by a couple million so I guess overall less people were watching. In fact, the BBC have stated that their shows on Boxing Day have actually rated better than Christmas Day overall.

AI was 87. One of the highest for a Christmas episode

After 2 days, the ratings for timeshift are already over 9m. There are 5 days left to count. I think we could go over 10m and that's without iPlayer.

AI is great. Ratings are lower than expected, but considering what the BBC usually gets in the timeframe (around 4m officials) it's still amazing and seeing as ratings were down across the board I see nothing to worry about there.

I don't think the ratings mean all that much anymore tbh. They are a nice indicator as to how the show is doing and great ammunition for the press to say the sky is falling in, but BARB are so behind the times in their calculations that the numbers are beginning to seem pointless. 'Official' figures, as they release them, miss out such an enormous section of the viewers, leaving out anything on DVR or iPlayer and so skewing the numbers to look smaller than the actual reach of the episode. Doctor Who is the biggest timeshifting show in the whole of the UK, already making overnights redundant, but the millions who now choose to watch at their convenience as apposed to when the schedulers put the show out, means that millions are now left off the totals. The way it is going at the moment, only about 60% of the audience for a given episode is actually being counted in the finals. That's a huge difference.

I think given it's timeslot there is nothing to worry about in terms of the numbers being down. As The Doc points out above, the interesting figure will be when we get the iplayer hits in as well. They may not be 'official', but I bet the BBC take them into account all the same.

We also have no idea what the HD count is, and with it being simulcast, they will feature in the finals.

Current figures are nearly 10m. Officials will come in on Wednesday but that's already a timeshift of over 4m from the 5.75 who watched it as it aired. (that figure is without the 1.84m) who watched it later on Christmas Day, giving the 7.72 overnight)

BARB released an update because they were slightly out. It's a marginal rise to 9.87m (38.8%), however, that tiny rise means that the show timeshifted 4.12 million, making it the most timeshifted episode of British television in history.

It also got 1,467,000m iPlayer hits in six days, taking the total way over 11m.

That's fantastic. It's down on most years though higher than TCI and TRB, but none of those were put on outside of primetime in an afternoon slot. The figure is fantastic!

Awesome news about the final figures. It's a shame it didn't break 10m, but from what I have read the average in that slot is about half of what Doctor Who got so it shows that the show can be put on pretty much anywhere and people will go to it. I prefer the later slot though.

It's a wonderful number, and far better than I expected it to get in it's timeframe. I know a lot of people are still doing food and visits and whatnot at that time so later is usually more ideal, but as TC says, it shows people will look for it. I had to timeshift myself this year for the first time ever. I wasn't happy about it.

I think this might be old news, but the official BBCAmerica ratings have this as the second most watched programme ever on the channel (behind Asylum). It got 1.434m viewers, up 54% on last years Christmas Special.
