When Saber came up with the idea for this section of the forum and I saw the Doc was doing top 50 of all time I couldn't resist taking on the challenge of NuWho top 50.

With nearly 100 episodes to pick from choosing the top 50 was hard. I narrowed it down to my absolute favourite 68 but trying to lose that extra 18 was hard! Deciding then on some order was even more difficult. Like the Doc, I've decided my order and there is no changing it now!

I will be posting an update every few days with the number 1 hopefully being announced at the anniversary. Please feel free to comment on (and criticise) my choices as they are added to the list. If you would like to make your own, then please go ahead and do so within this section.

Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks

The Tenth Doctor
21st - 28th April 2007

I'm not that surprised that this one appears in my top 50. It is another episode which I think is fairly underrated, and one which I believe has received fairly negative reviews.

I am not a fan of series 3 admittedly, but this is one of my favourites from the series. This episode has a truly historical feel to it (not with the Daleks) but I really enjoy the episodes which have a historical feel to them, and this one does a good job of showing what life in New York could have been like in the 1930s during the depression, and it does an even better job of basing the whole story around what lengths the then homeless may have done to get any sort of money.

I love the way the story brings in the human side of the daleks. It, for me, shows the lengths that the daleks will go to to get any sort of army on their side.

This may be a surprising entry to my top 50, but it is one which I believe earns its place here. Smiley

This definitely would never have made my list. I can see the appeal of it, but for me it just never worked. I don't like the story or the pig people or the hybrid idea. Too much of it just doesn't work for me. I doubt I will ever come around to this one.

It's not a favourite of mine either, however I don't think it is nearly as bad as it is painted to be. Would it make my list? Probably not, but I wouldn't stick it on a 'worst of' list, either.

I don't mind this story too much. It gets silly in places and I think the pig people were daft, but I don't think it's all bad. Perhaps it would have been stronger had some of it been cut and it made into a one parter instead.

I like this story. Definitely one of the weaker Dalek stories but it's not bad at all. I think credit should always be given for trying something new and though it didn't really come off in this, they at least attempted to stray away from the obvious.

I could never really take to this story. I think it looked great but the plot was a bit dire and some of the characters weren't so strong. It's nice to see it on someones top list though because I think all stories should cater to someone and this one gets it's fair share of bad press.

I just plain don't like this story. It doesn't work for me at all. I wish I was being a bit more constructive about it, but I just never took to it.

Human Nature/Family of Blood

The Tenth Doctor
26th May - 2nd June 2007

Admittedly I really really didn't like this episode, yet it is one that after rewatch has grown on me. I don't feel I could place this one higher up in my top 50, purely because I still don't enjoy it that much.

I won't lie, the story does have some good aspects to it. The ending however is very different to anything I've ever seen before and I think it shows quite a bad side to the doctor, a side which I don't like.

I know this story is one that many people enjoy so felt that it would be wrong not to include it in my top 50, and I also believe that it is one of the stronger episodes of series 3. One of the only ones which I will watch again.

What do you think about this story?

You shouldn't worry about what other people find popular. Just go with your favourites. And talking of favourites, this is one of mine. I'm not sure it would have taken the top spot in my list, but I am pretty certain it would have broken the top 5. I love it.

Human Nature is one that I would definitely have chosen. The story is brilliant and everyone acts so well in it. That can't be said for Daleks in Manhattan though, and I think that probably would have missed my list.

The Waters of Mars

The Tenth Doctor
15th November 2009

This is another episode which at the time I really didn't enjoy, yet it is definitely one which has grown on me a lot upon rewatch.

The ending always catches me out as a brilliant one, yet one which is very unlike the Doctor. I remember when this came out it was supposedly the scariest episode, yet I don't think I find it that scary. Yes aspects are creepy, but not scary (then again if I sat down and watched this with my little cousins I think they would be having nightmares)!

I may be mistaken but I think this is the best special that was written for the 2009 run. I've never been too keen on the others, but this one certainly takes the spot of the best of them.

What do you think?

I'd have definitely put this higher on my list if I was only doing NuWho. It would probably even make the list if I was covering both. It's a great story.

I thought the Waters of Mars was an interesting story. I didn't really like the resolution - I'm not sure I believed in the simplicity of the fix at the end. She should have been dead, therefore if she tops herself then all will be sorted and she'll be an inspiration for her family again. I don't think it works quite like that. On the plus side, it did have a really creepy vibe about it and I loved the feel of Bowie Base and the crew.

Personally speaking I had much more love for Planet of the Dead - I thought it was more fun and a more 'Doctor Who' like ending. I do agree with you, I am not sure the specials really worked as an idea but I can't argue with your choice Smiley

This was my favourite of the specials, though I loved PotD too and that one seems to take some stick. I'd have had this higher, I think.

This was my favourite of the specials and definitely deserves a place on the list. I think that the ending, as VA says, was a bit messy, but otherwise it's a great story.

The atmosphere of this story is what makes it work so well for me. It's very claustraphobic and quick paced, which really builds up the tension. I love it. Even the ending.

The Waters of Mars is fantastic. I'm certain it would be higher on my list. It was one of those stories that was really lucky to air later in the year and benefit from the dark nights. It was really crappy, I thought.
