He is also vain, ego-centric and quite mad

I'm not going to lie, it is impossible for me to be objective about this episode. I remember it vividly as a child and it is one of my defining sci-fi stories. As TC points out, the first part is a bit flabby - it takes a while to get going. But the concept, a universe held together by mathematics and a dying time lord, was just magical. Put alongside that is the very 'Moriarty'-like conflict that the Doctor has with the Master (even resulting in a Reichenbach style fall). The whole package is just wonderful.

I've given it 5 just because it is so deeply engrained in my cultural DNA! I will never forget the feeling  when, in the spring of 1981, a 9 year old boy saw Tom Baker fall from the radio telescope and witnessed his first regeneration.
