It seems like this could end up being a bit morbid, but my choices don't really include the gruesome of ones that were blatently put in for shock value. This list is going to have more in the way of emotional impact.

I've included a mix from both classic and new stories and then ordered them in the order with which I think they had the most impact on me and how sad I was to see that particular character go. The choices are all my own, but if you disagree with any then feel free to make a similar list to compare against.

I will update this one once a month until we get to number one. Please comment and share your thoughts as I go.

TEN

Reinette
And there she goes. Leaving Versailles for the last time.

It's an interesting one, this. Always a popular episode, it would seem that Moff built on that by giving the same story to Amy Pond a few years later, this time developing it over the course of two years and giving it a different outcome, but the essentials are still there. A girl who meets the Doctor as a child while scared of the monsters in her bedroom, then sporadic visits until she is older and obsessed with his return. Despite the extra time to develop the story with Amy, though, I think Moffat makes it work much better here and a big reason for that is the ending.

The chemistry between Reinette and the Doctor was evident, and despite the fact we knew it was never going to be, I think we all rooted for her to get her trip to the stars. So when the Doctor comes back for her, moments later for him but after years of waiting for her, only to find her body being escorted away, it really pulls an emotional punch. As if that wasn't bad enough, her deathbed letter to him really hammers it home that she never got to be the girl who stopped waiting.

I remember the first time I watched this. I cried so hard. I cry at everything, but this was such a weepy. I had no idea whether or not, like Adam in series 1, she would get a couple of episodes and so had no idea how the ending would go. To have her die but spend the rest of her life waiting was just so tragic.

Reinette's story is so sad and I agree that they did it better in 45 minutes with her than they did in two years with Amy. Hers is definitely one of the sadder deaths in the show.

I think the thing about a good death, is that it will only affect us when the story backs it up. This is one of those times where it all came together really well. There have been many times in this series and others, where I just haven't cared about the death because it hasn't meant anything to the character or the story. In a short time with this one, we were made to care. That's great writing.

Aw this was so sad. I think it was round about this time that they decided to have Ten fall in love every week, but in this episode it worked. The whole thing was really sad.

This episode is brilliant and the ending is so sad. It really packs a punch. I also agree that the story was done much better here than it was with Amy.

I liked this but it wouldn't have made my list. I think we have been given so many deaths since the show returned and while this was a good one there are others that have affected me more.

He is also vain, ego-centric and quite mad

An excellent choice - as much as I love explosions and lots of firepower, I thought this was a very beautiful piece of writing and perfectly acted. It was both 'everything Doctor Who should be about' and also 'utterly unique in Doctor Who' both at the same time!

Aww this one was so sad. Definitely worthy of a place on a list like this. It never made sense to me that he didn't go back at some point in between her last meeting with him and her death as that wouldn't have crossed timelines, but I suppose that would have taken the effect of her death away.

I loved the way this character played out. It was really wrought with emotion and played out so well. A great entry to the list.

NINE

Harriet Jones, Former Prime Minister
Oh you know nothing of humans, and that will be your downfall.

When a character dies on screen and it makes you sad or even cry, you know that the writer has got it right and done a good job. If that writer can make you laugh and cry at the same time then they've done something brilliant.

Harriet Jones was an odd character. Brilliantly played by Penelope Wilton, the comic timing and the other characters reactions to her are what made her so funny and brilliant. After having a lapse in judgement and the Doctor (pretty meanly) bringing about her downfall, the character made a surprise return a few years later and more than made up for her errors. Her courage in standing up to the Daleks, knowing she would die and yet still delivering her most famous line made everyone smile as we watched her extermination. An absolutely brilliant end to the character, if not a tad bittersweet.

Aww, great choice for the list. I loved Harriet Jones and it really was a funny/sad moment when she died. It was a shame to see the end of the character, but they did it in a great way and the Daleks saying 'yes, we know who you are' was an excellent touch.

Awesome ending. If I was going to die on Doctor Who, this would be how I would want to go

Harriet was so funny and I never expected to see her again, so when she came back (bare in mind I watched these years after they aired) I was pleased to see her again, but I was gutted when she died. It was a funny but very brave way to go out.

Two excellent choices, though I think I would have had them the other way around. MDPs death had more punch for me personally.
