I is for...

Ian Chesterton

Ian Chesterton was a physics teacher at Coal Hill School in London up till 1963.  Investigating the strange behaviour of a pupil called Susan Foreman, along with colleague Barbara Wright, he discovered that Susan and her grandfather, the Doctor, were time-travelling aliens.  Ian and Barbara were whisked away with them in the TARDIS and travelled for a couple of years, while the Doctor made half-hearted attempts to get them home.  They eventually returned in a captured Dalek time machine, getting home in 1965.  It's not known how they explained the gap.  According to Sarah Jane Smith, they are currently married, living in Cambridge and appear not to have aged at all.

During his travels, Ian showed a surprising talent for action, although this may be a result of National Service training, which (given the period) he would almost certainly have undertaken before embarking on his career.  His exploits include a successful commando raid on the Dalek city with a group of Thals, and he was both an Aztec warrior and a Roman gladiator.  Ian is technically a knight of the realm, having been knighted by Richard I in the 1190s, though it's unclear whether this would be recognised in the present-day UK.

K is for....

Kinda

Kinda was the third story of season 19 of Doctor Who. It featured mainly Tegan and Adric alongside the Fifth Doctor. Narratively, it was an especially important story for Tegan, as it established a villain, the Mara, particularly interested in her. The Mara would later return to plague Tegan in other performed Doctor Who stories.

L is for...

Lake Silencio

Lake Silencio was located in Utah, situated on the Plain of Sighs. On 22 April 2011, the Doctor brought his companions to the lake for a picnic. During the picnic, Amy Pond saw a Silent in the distance, but promptly forgot about it when she looked away. Later in the picnic, the earlier version of River Song in an Apollo spacesuit emerged from the lake and shot the Doctor three times, apparently killing him. Amy Pond, Rory Williams, and River placed his body into a nearby boat, set it aflame with gasoline provided by an elderly Canton Delaware and pushed it into the lake.

M is for...

Mentiads

The Mentiads are a secret order on the planet Zanak who've developed their mental powers so they can control and even kill people with their minds.  Though initially appearing sinister, they are actually fighting against the evil of how Zanak is used by the Captain for piracy against other planets.  Their mental powers give them strong empathy for those who are crushed on the victim planets by Zanak materialising around them.  They are eventually instrumental in restoring Zanak to a normal state.

N is for...

Normal Space

Normal Space, or N-Space for short, is a name given to the prime universe to distinguish it from the smaller E-Space. The majority of the Doctor's adventures happen in this universe.

O is for....

Oncoming Storm

The Oncoming Storm is an epithet the Doctor said the "legends of Skaro" call him whilst taunting the Daleks. Rose Tyler also called the Doctor by this name when she and Mickey Smith were captured by the clockwork droids and being prepared for dissection and was threatening them using that title.

P is for...

Pete's World

A name give by the Doctor to the Earth in an alternative universe, in which early-21st century Britain was similar, but a little different.  The name came from the fact that Rose's father, Pete Tyler, was alive in that reality and dead in ours.

It's not clear at what point the development of Pete's World differed from ours, and how far the divergence has gone.  On the one hand, most of the same people seem to be alive, although occasionally with different names.  On the other, Britain is a republic with a president, and there's a country called New Germany.

It was in this world that John Lumic of Cybus Industries created his own version of the Cybermen.  After they were defeated, Harriet Jones became president, and it appears to be here, rather than in our world, that her period in office is the Golden Age.  Mickey remained in Pete's World, although he later returned, and subsequently Rose and Jackie settled there with the alternative version of Pete, and later the human copy of the Tenth Doctor.

Q is for...

Quantum Lock

Quantum-locking was a defence mechanism used by the Weeping Angels. When observed by any living creature (even other Weeping Angels) the Weeping Angels turned to stone, making them resistant to harm. When they weren't being observed, the Weeping Angels could move. Weeping Angels could also turn to stone at will, or when they believed they were being observed. However if the Weeping Angels stared at each other they would turn to stone permanently, leaving them trapped until they died from starvation.

R is for...

Rutans

The Rutans are an intelligent species that evolved on Ruta 3, an icy and inhospitable world, but have spread throught numerous galaxies.  They have the form of giant, green jellyfish with a fluorescent glow, though they have shapeshifting abilities.  They absorb electrical energy and can deliver a fatal electrical charge.  They appear to have a collective nature, since a single Rutan will refer to itself as we, but can act individually.

The Rutans have been at war with the Sontarans for thousands of years, and the same war appears to drag on for many thousands of years into the future.  Neither side appears to have much idea of why they're fighting, but they're implacable enemies.

There's only one reliably recorded incident of Rutans coming to Earth, though many other rumoured cases.  On that occasion, in the early 20th century, the Rutan scout and its mother ship were both destroyed, and there appears to have been no follow-up.

S is for...

Sutekh

Sutekh, also known as Sutekth the Destroyer, was an Osirian who planned to destroy all life in the universe. He feared all forms of life which might one day challenge his hegemony, and so became the destroyer of all living things.

T is for...

Timey Wimey

"Timey Wimey" is a phrase first used by the Tenth Doctor in a rather unsuccessful attempt to explain the nature of time to Sally Sparrow.  The actual quote is People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... timey wimey... stuff.

The phrase has come to refer to any story involved time paradoxes of such complexity that they come with a potential-head-exploding health warning.

U is for...

UNIT

The Unified Intelligence Taskforce — formerly known as the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, and more usually called UNIT — was a military organisation which operated under the auspices of the United Nations. Its remit was to investigate and combat paranormal and extraterrestrial threats to the Earth. UNIT was not the only alien defence organisation, but it was the one with which the Doctor had the closest personal involvement.

V is for...

Voord

The Voord are a movement (or maybe a gang) on the planet Marinus, founded by Yartek.  For a centuries, Marinus had been controlled by a machine called the Conscience, which prevented anyone from developing negative or criminal impulses.  However, Yartek discovered how to avoid the influence of the Conscience, which appeared to include wearing all-over rubber suits with an antennae-like structure on the head.

The activities of Yartek and the Voord (never entirely specified) broke the peace of Marinus, but their aim was to get hold of the machine, so they could control everyone's behaviour according to their own advantage.  After many years, they appeared to have done so, but Yartek had been tricked into destroying the Conscience instead.  As far as is known, Yartek and all the Voord were killed when the machine exploded.

X is for...

Xanxia

Xanxia was the tyrannical queen of the planet Zanak.  She was put into stasis at the instant before her death, but continued controlling Zanak through an avatar, which forced the Captain to navigate the hollowed-out planet to dematerialise and reappear around other planets, which are then cannibalised for their minerals, wiping out any life.  Her aim is to gain the power to restore herself to full life, but the Captain has been planning against her.  With his help, the Doctor is able to destroy Xanxia.

Y is for...
Yeti
These robotic servants of the Great Intelligence were encountered by the Second Doctor, Jamie and Victoria, twice. Once was in the Himalayas, where the Yetis' job was to scare off or kill anyone who approached, hence the legends of the Abominable Snowmen. The Doctor and friends later saw the beasts in the London Underground, where they were armed with web guns. The creatures were defeated on both occasions.

Fun Fact: Popular children's character Basil Brush once encountered one of Doctor Who's Yeti in the Himalayas. No, really.
