N is for

Nicholas Courtney

Nicholas Courtney (born William Nicholas Stone Courtney; 16 December 1929 - 22 February 2011) played first Colonel and then Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, beginning in The Web of Fear and finally in Battlefield. He reprised the role in the fan video Downtime (later adapted into one of the Virgin Missing Adventures), the spin-off program The Sarah Jane Adventures and audio dramas for the BBC and Big Finish Productions.

O is for

Owen Harper

Owen is the medical officer and a field agent for Torchwood Three, a team of alien-hunters based in Cardiff. In his private life, Owen is a narcissistic womanizer with a long history of sexual partners, including colleagues Gwen Cooper and Suzie Costello, but remained indifferent to the affections of colleague Toshiko Sato. The show's second series would see Owen experience death, only to be resurrected and forced to adjust to the uncertainty of his undead existence, before dying again in his final appearance

P is for...

Pandorica

The Pandorica was a mythical artefact, said to contain a terrifying warrior, trickster or goblin that was trapped inside.  It turns out to be real, and was buried underneath Stonehenge until at least the 2nd century AD, but in fact it was made retrospectively as a trap for the Doctor, based on Amy's interest in the story of Pandora's Box.  After a long history, in which it was constantly guarded by a figure known as the Last Centurian, it was used by the Doctor to reboot the dying universe, after which none of the above events actually happened.

Q is for...

Queen Victoria

Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, Empress of India and Defender of the Faith, was an influential monarch on Earth in the 19th century, ruling from 1837 to 1901. Her reign, known as the Victorian era, was marked by tremendous strides in technology and the arts in Britain and elsewhere. Victoria is known to have met the Doctor at least twice; once during her coronation ceremony in 1838, and in 1879 she experienced an adventure with the Tenth Doctor. The latter led to her effectively banishing the Doctor from her country and forming the Torchwood Institute, as the British Empire's defence against the dark forces with which the Doctor seemed to consort

R is for...

Rassilon

Rassilon was a Gallifreyan who, along with Omega and "the Other", gave his people the gift of time travel and founded Time Lord society.  He was the first Lord President of the High Council, but different accounts describe him either as a benevolent ruler, or as an autocratic tyrant who was deposed.  Whichever was true, he was revered by the Time Lords as their founder, and most of the artefacts used by each Lord President, symbolically or usefully, are attributed to Rassilon.

Although he appears to have died and his tomb can be found in the Dead Zone, Rassilon's consciousness seems to have survived, and he returned to power at the time of the Time War, although the circumstances aren't yet known.  He planned to end the war by destroying time itself, but was prevented when the Doctor time-locked the whole war, including Gallifrey, and his attempt to break the lock was also foiled by the Doctor.

S is for...

Sil

Sil was a Mentor from Thoros Beta. He was actively involved in various unethical business schemes during the late 24th century. Sil once said ,"There is nothing I more enjoy than human suffering." He was extremely self-centred, greedy and manipulative, as shown in his attempt to govern Varos. Like all Mentors, Sil looked like a slug with humanoid features and fin like appendages on his head and in between his arms and torso.

T is for

Time Lords

The Time Lords were the oligarchic rulers of the planet Gallifrey, and thus also Gallifreyan. The Gallifreyans had one of the oldest and mightiest civilizations in the Universe. As the Time Lords, they would hold absolute power for some ten million years. Finally however, the Last Great Time War all but wiped out the race.

U is for...

Uxarieus

A planet colonised by an independent group from Earth, whose colony was threatened by the interest of the Interplanetary Mining Corporation, who wish the exploit the planet's resources.  However, the indigenous people, who appear very primitive, turn out to be the heirs of an ancient civilisation who possess a doomsday weapon, which the Master is attempting to obtain.  In the end, the last indigenous ruler destroys the weapon, and his underground city with it, and the colonists manage to expell the IMG, with the Doctor's help.

V is for...

Vicki

Vicki was a young woman whom the First Doctor, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright met at sixteen years of age soon after the Doctor's granddaughter Susan Foreman was left behind on Earth. Having lost both her parents in relatively quick succession, she decided to join the three time travellers on their adventures. Once the two teachers left the TARDIS, she travelled for an extended period with Steven Taylor, before leaving the Doctor's side to marry Troilus and to take the married name Cressida.

W is for

The War Chief

The War Chief was a renegade Time Lord who assisted a group of alien warriors in the 1969 serial The War Games, which was the last to feature the Second Doctor.

The warriors had been kidnapping soldiers from various wars in Earth's history to play war games on an unknown planet. The War Chief provided the warriors with basic TARDIS-like travel machines, called SIDRATs, which they used to kidnap the human soldiers and travel between era-specific zones they had created, as well as supplying the aliens with hypnotic mind-control devices to gain full control of the human armies.

When the War Chief and the Doctor came face to face, they recognised each other instantly. The War Chief wanted the Doctor's help to double-cross the warriors and seize power for himself. The Doctor initially feigned compliance in order to gain the alien's trust, but after exhausting any possible way of removing the soldiers himself he reluctantly summoned the Time Lords for help. The alien War Lord discovered the War Chief's plans to betray him and his people, and after cornering him in the SIDRAT hanger as he attempted to flee the Time Lords, he was shot by the War Lord's guards.

X is for...

Xylok

The Xylok seemed to be made of clear crystals, but they had a very unusual structure and were actually alive. They could contact other Xylok from afar and interface with computers. They could also apparently survive for millions of years. Due to their crystalline and computer-like nature, they were also vulnerable to 21st century Earth computer viruses.

Y is for...

Yrcanos

King Yrcanos is a warlord from Thoros Alpha, with an uncompromising warrior ethic and a tendency to shout a lot.  He's captured on Thoros Beta by the Mentors and the human scientist Crozier, but escapes and meets the Doctor's companion, Peri, whom he falls in love with.  When Crozier puts the Mentor Kiv's brain into Peri, Yrcanos appears to be forced to kill her, but we learn (without much explanation) that this hasn't actually happened.  Yrcanos marries Peri and settles down with her on Thoros Alpha.

Z is for...

Zoe

Zoe Heriot was a young scientist from the 21st century who accompanied the Second Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon in their travels aboard the Doctor's TARDIS. Zoe met the Doctor when she worked upon The Wheel, which was invaded by Cybermen. Deciding that she had learned all that she could there, she hid out in the TARDIS and so began her adventures. Eventually the Time Lords sent Zoe back to the Wheel, where she was met by Tanya Lernov. Having had her memory of her time with the Doctor and Jamie removed, other than her initial adventure with them on the Wheel, she was never aware that she had ever been away.

A is for

Adric

Adric was a companion to the Fourth and Fifth Doctors. He grew up in another universe called E-Space. He died trying to stop Captain Briggs' space freighter from crashing into Earth. Adric was a mathematical genius, but was socially awkward. He was fiercely loyal to the Doctor and had a generally amicable relationship with the Time Lord, who acted as his mentor. Adric wanted desperately to be brave and accepted; he defied the Master and died trying to solve a math/computer problem to save the earth. As he crashed to his death, unable to access the computer system to input his last mathematical calculation, he said, "Now I'll never know if I was right."

B is for...

Bessie

Though other incarnations of the Doctor used the car, Bessie was the Third Doctor's main mode of transport during his exile on Earth. A canary-yellow Edwardian roadster, she was a key part of his compensation package from UNIT, and indeed the only specific demand he made of the Brigadier when he agreed to be UNIT's scientific advisor. Despite being beloved by the Doctor, the car was frequently ridiculed and underestimated by the Doctor's friends. Heavily tricked out, the car's many modifications often bewildered his associates. The Brigadier in particular was dismissive of the car's abilities and, at least early on, didn't believe it was capable of basic locomotion.

C is for...

The Chase

The Chase was the eighth story of season 2 of Doctor Who. As well as featuring the first use of time travel by the Daleks, it saw the departures of original companions Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, played by William Russell and Jacqueline Hill respectively, and the first appearance of new companion Steven Taylor, portrayed by Peter Purves. Peter Purves further does "double-duty" in this story, by appearing earlier in the serial as an incidental character.

It saw the same story style as Nation's The Keys of Marinus, with the TARDIS crew in different locations nearly every episode. A similar style would later be used in The Daleks' Master Plan and The Infinite Quest. The Chase also saw characters from other works of fiction making appearances, albeit as robotic duplicates in this story. Similar appearances would occur elsewhere in the programme's history. It also saw the program's take on the mystery of the Mary Celeste, a story that would be contradicted by other media. Later, the story Carnival of Monsters would feature a different mysterious ship, albeit a fictional one.

D is for...

Draconians

The Draconians are an advanced reptilian humanoid race who inhabit the planet Draconia, in our galaxy.  They have a rather rigid social structure, with an emperor at their head, but the Doctor considers them to be an enlightened and civilised people, if you know how to approach them.  By the 26th century, Earth and Draconia have become the two dominant powers in the galaxy and have fought a war, started by a misunderstanding.  Another war appears to be averted at the last moment by the Doctor's intervention.  Humans sometimes refer to Draconians as Dragons, but this is considered an insulting term.

E is for...

Earthshock

Earthshock was the sixth story of Season 19 of Doctor Who. It saw the unannounced return of the Cybermen as lead villains for the first time since Revenge of the Cybermen in 1975. Furthermore, it saw the death of Adric. This was the first televised death of a companion since those of Katarina and Sara Kingdom in The Daleks' Master Plan in 1966.

Prior to broadcast, John Nathan-Turner decided that he wanted to keep the return of the Cybermen a surprise. Normally, the public gallery in use for filming would be open and the public could watch, but when filming for Earthshock commenced, it was closed and security guards were called in to keep people out. Nathan-Turner also turned down a Radio Times photo shoot to ensure this secret.

G is for...

Gallifrey

Gallifrey is the home planet of the Time Lords.  Physical features that are frequently mentioned are skies of burnt orange, trees with silver leaves and red grass.  The main building is the Capitol, from which the High Council rule and where all major events take place.  Gallifrey was destroyed in the Time War, but remains intact within a time lock.  An attempt by the High Council to break out of the time lock was thwarted by the Doctor.

Gallifrey was first alluded to in the very first episode and described by Susan in The Sensorites, without being named.  Similarly unnamed, Gallifrey appeared in The War Games, Colony in Space and The Three Doctors, before being casually given a name in The Time Warrior.  Stories set substantially on Gallifrey since then have included The Deadly Assassin, The Invasion of Time, Arc of Infinity and The Five Doctors.
