U is for...

Umbrella

Like the Fourth Doctors scarf, the umbrella was an accessory that is often associated with the Doctor, particularly the Sixth and Seventh. The Seventh Doctor initially carried his previous incarnation's multicoloured umbrella, at one point clumsily brandishing it as a weapon against the Rani. He later acquired a new umbrella, with an elaborate handle in the shape of a large red question mark.

V is for...

Victoria Waterfield

Victoria was the daughter of Edward Waterfield, a Victorian gentleman.  Her mother died when she was a baby.  In 1866, when she was in her teens, she was living in the house of Theodore Maxtible in Kent, with whom her father was undertaking experiments in time travel, when the house was invaded by Daleks, who took her prisoner.  Although rescued by Jamie and Kemel, she was recaptured and taken to Skaro, where her father was killed helping to defeat the Daleks.

She travelled for a while with the Doctor and Jamie, encountering Cybermen, Yeti, the scientist Salamander and seaweed creatures.  Although innocent and sometimes timid, Victoria showed surprising resilience at times.  She relied heavily on Jamie, who had a crush on her, but eventually decided the danger was too much for her and settled in the late 20th century with a couple called the Harrises.

W is for....

Warriors of the Deep

Warriors of the Deep was the first story in Season 21 of Doctor Who. It marked the return of two monster races last seen during the Jon Pertwee era, the Silurians and the Sea Devils, and was the first story to feature both.

X is for...

Xeraphin

The Xeraphin are a species from the planet Xeriphas.  Their usual form hasn't been seen, but they are capable of forming a disembodied gestalt, one of which is made unstable and used by the Master on primeval Earth.  They also created the shapeshifting robot Kamelion.

Y is for...

YANA

The Master was resurrected by the Time Lords during the Last Great Time War. They believed that he would be a perfect warrior due to his savagery. He was present when the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. Frightened by the horror of the Time War, he ran away to the end of the universe. There, he used a chameleon arch to hide himself as a human, Professor Yana, who later met the Doctor.

Z is for...

Zeta Minor

Zeta Minor is a far-off planet, described as being on the edge of the universes of matter and antimatter (whatever precisely that means).  Its surface (at least the part seen) is mostly a bizarre form of jungle which seems uninhabited, but is actually the home of antimatter beings who can destroy humanoids on contact, but are able to reason and negotiate.  When an expedition from Morestra attempts to take away minerals that are part of the living planet, the antimatter beings attack the Morestrans, but release them when all mineral samples are returned.

A is for....

Asylum of the Daleks

Asylum of the Daleks was the first episode of the seventh series of Doctor Who produced by BBC Wales. Steven Moffat's first script to feature the Daleks as the main adversaries, it also served to launch the beginning of the series' major plot strands: the end of Amy and Rory's travels in the TARDIS and the beginning of the mystery surrounding Clara Oswald's identity. Importantly, the episode created doubt as to the the strength of Rory and Amy's love — which would ultimately be unquestionably answered with the series 7a finalé – and it introduced audiences to Oswald as "soufflé girl", a moniker that would ultimately gain greater resonance in the 7b ender.

B is for....

Ben Jackson

Benjamin "Ben" Jackson was a companion of the First and Second Doctors, along with Polly Wright and Jamie McCrimmon. After helping the First Doctor defeat the sentient computer known as WOTAN and its War Machines on 20 July 1966, Ben and Polly, mistaking it for an ordinary police box, entered the TARDIS by accident. The ship took off. When the Doctor regenerated he continued to travel with the Second Doctor. Before leaving, Ben and Polly insisted that they would stay if the Doctor needed them. The pair departed from the Doctor at the same time, having discovered they had arrived back on Earth on the very same day they left.

C is for...

Celestial Toymaker

The Celestial Toymaker is an immortal being whose power is immense - his species and origins are unknown.  He creates a world for himself to live in, outside time and space, where he lures travellers and forces them to play games against the dolls he animates for the purpose.  For more sophisticated opponents, such as the Doctor, he has complex games like the Trilogic Game.  Those who lose are converted into dolls themselves, but if the Toymaker wins, his world is destroyed.  In a sense, this too is a win for him, since he survives and can create a new world, whereas his opponents are destroyed in the wreck - unless they're extremely clever.

D is for...

Doctor Who (can't believe nobody did this one yet Tongue)

Doctor Who is both a television show and a global multimedia franchise created and controlled by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

It centres on a time traveller called "the Doctor", who comes from a race of beings known as Time Lords. He travels through space and time in a time machine he calls the TARDIS. This ship — which looks like a small, London police box on the outside — has nearly infinite dimensions on the inside. It has become such an iconic shape in British culture that it is currently the intellectual property of the BBC rather than its actual makers, the Metropolitan Police Service.

E is for...

Earthshock

Earthshock was the sixth story of season 19 of Doctor Who. It was notable for its high ratings, the deliberately unannounced return of the Cybermen, and the apparent death of Adric.

Indeed, this serial and Time-Flight together offered producer John Nathan-Turner his highest consistent chart positions. Earthshock was the only serial in JNT's producership whose episodes were all in the top fifty of programmes watched on British television.

JNT took a now-well-known publicity gamble with this serial by deciding that he wanted to keep the return of the Cybermen a surprise. Normally, there was a public gallery overlooking the studio floor at Television Centre which allowed public viewing of proceedings. For Earthshock, JNT closed it and security kept people out. Nathan-Turner also turned down a Radio Times photo shoot to ensure this secret.

The death of Adric was also a considerable gamble, since no long-running companion had ever been killed on Doctor Who before. Special, downbeat titles were commissioned for the end of part four, making the final part the only episode, as of August 2013, to have no end theme music.

F is for...

Fendahl

The Fendahl is a creature from the supposed fifth planet of the Solar System, between Mars and Jupiter, which was destroyed by the Time Lords. It consumes all other lifeforms, making it an evolutionary blind alley.  It escaped from its native planet before the destruction and implanted itself in a primitive hominid, which it steered into evolving into a human.  When the hominid's skull was discovered, the Fendahl transferred to a woman called Thea Ransome and converted other humans into its offspring, the Fendahleen.  All were destroyed, however, in an explosion.

G is for...

Gridlock

Gridlock was the third episode of the third series of the revived series of Doctor Who. It marked the death of the Face of Boe and his final words to the Tenth Doctor and the first televised re-appearance of the Macra since 1967's The Macra Terror. The Doctor and Martha Jones were separated for most of the story.

H is for...

House

House is a sentient planetoid in a small bubble universe who feeds on artron energy.  For this purpose, it has lured countless Time Lords into its clutches and uses their TARDISes as a food source, killing the Time Lords and using their body parts to renew the slaves who live on its surface.  However, the Doctor, and particularly his TARDIS, prove more than a match for House, who is destroyed.

J is for...

John Smith

"John Smith" is a pseudonym used regularly by the Doctor when on contemporary or near-contemporary Earth.  It was first given randomly to the Second Doctor by his companion Jamie on board the Wheel in Space when pressed for a name for the unconscious Doctor - he took it from the manufacturer's name on a piece of equipment.

The name was used by the Third Doctor as his official designation in UNIT records, and has been in use many times since, most notably when he transformed himself temporarily into a human in 1913 to hide from the Family of Blood.

It's probably (though not necessarily) a coincidence that the music his granddaughter Susan is listening to on her first appearance is by a band called "John Smith and the Common Men".

L is for...

Logopolis

Logopolis was a planet whose human-like population were incredibly skilled at mathematical calculation.  Their main pastime was sitting making mental calculations, and this somehow combined telepathically to make them the most powerful computer in the universe.  Logopolis's principal task was the prevent the universe from collapsing by introducing a stability it didn't possess naturally.  This failed when the Master destroyed Logopolis, and large sections of the universe were destroyed before the Doctor managed to halt the collapse.

M is for...

Macra

The Macra were a gigantic crustacean race that fed on unclean gases which were poisonous to humans. The Macra resembled crabs. They would consume humans when possible.

Eventually, the Macra fell into evolutionary decline, reverting to mindless creatures in the depths of New New York.

N is for...

Nero

Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (37-68 AD) was Emperor of Rome from 54 to 68.  Although he's gone down in history of a fat, vicious, insane buffoon, many historians now think this is an exaggerated picture of him.  Nevertheless, he did plenty to make himself unpopular, and the legions revolted against him in 68. Nero committed suicide to avoid the dishonour of execution.

Nero may or may not have started the fire that destroyed much of Rome in 64 AD, though this too may be propaganda spread after his overthrow.  Nevertheless, rumours have surfaced in recent decades that he was actually given the idea to start the fire by a visiting lyre-player called Maximus Pettulian, who then mysteriously vanished.
