I have put this in this section because it's not part of the main show and so no plot elements can be spoiled, however if the spoiler avoiders would like it moved then just pop a note in here and we can sort it An Adventure In Space And Time is the one off drama written by Mark Gatiss that is airing at the anniversary which will look into the origins of Doctor Who and the difficulties of getting it onto the screen. Not much is known about it so far, and filming doesn't start until the spring, but this can be a place for discussion as I am sure it is going to be of interest to many fans. So far it has been confirmed that it will now be 90 minutes instead of 60 and will film in Wimbledon. In an interview, Gatiss said: “This is the story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true television original. And how an actor – William Hartnell – stereotyped in hard-man roles, became a hero to millions of children. I’ve wanted to tell this story for more years than I can remember. To make it happen for Doctor Who’s 50th birthday is quite simply a dream come true.”

I can't wait for this. I'm not even letting the fact that Gatiss is writing it spoil my excitement. I have very high hopes that it will be brilliant.
Odd choice of filming location though.

This sounds pretty cool. I hope Gatiss doesn't write himself a role though.

Well it's not technically 'Doctor Who' so it doesn't have to be made in Wales. As a BBC production I guess they can film it anywhere. Perhaps Wimbledon studios have areas still as they were in the 60's and close to how Television Centre looked, whereas the ones in Cardiff are brand new. This sounds pretty cool. I hope Gatiss doesn't write himself a role though.
Agreed!

I think this is going to be very very interesting, but not what a lot of people are expecting. I think some key casting decisions are going to be Verity (who actually needs playing by someone like Jenna Louise Coleman) and Sydney Newman (I'd go with Alfred Molina but it needs a bloomin' strong and powerful heavy-weight actor for this). If anyone is interested, there is a documentary on the 'Edge of Destruction' DVD which pretty much maps out the creative process behind the creation of Doctor Who and will give a great background to the whole story. I really think Doctor Who is the most successful thing ever made by committee! This story - if done properly - will showcase that

Just a thought, but in The Five Doctors they replaced Hartnell with another actor for the story. Perhaps if they have a multi Doctor story for the anniversary they could use whoever is playing Hartnell in this as the First Doctor in that? I'm sure fans would be ok with it as it was done before.

That would be a great idea if they went with it. Wouldn't make sense to cast two seperate actors seeing as it's all being made by the same people.

Aren't they filming this from next month? Is there any casting news or anything?

I can't wait for this. I wanted to know the type of show it would be so I watched the one they made about Coronation Street and it was amazing. I don't even watch Coronation Street but I thought it was brilliant. I know this has a different team and is telling a different story but if it is half as good as that it will be awesome.
The thing that worries me though is that Gatiss has stated that he 'wants people to realise this is a drama, not a docu-drama', which makes me wonder how much of it he is going to make up as he goes along.

Going by an interview with Gatiss yesterday, the story is going to focus on Hartnell up to the point of his leaving.
“It’s mostly the personal journey of William Hartnell and his relationship with [Doctor Who producer] Verity Lambert,” said Gatiss of the show. “Eventually he had to leave, and none of us like to find that we are replaceable.”
Covering 3 years in 90 minutes might be tough. Also probably means we won't be seeing much of any of the companions

I've seen a couple stills from it, but they were grainy and rough. I haven't seen any trailers though.

I just watched possibly the worst copy of a trailer that ever existed. Whoever took it on their phone was obviously on a nokia 3210 in the back row, but what I could make out looked awesome!

It does strike me as odd, especially given that the trailer for that and the 50th anniversary (and I say this after about 4 minutes of searching) has been broken down and disected and printed on at least 20 different websites telling everyone of their contents. Based on comments I've read, witholding it from the wider audience just seems to have wound everyone up rather than make them excited about it.

To be honest, I think its more Moff than the BBC. Im sure the BBC would be willing to share the Comic-Con trailer if Moff was ok with it?

I have no idea who would make the final decision on that, tbh. I'm sure that if the BBC wanted it to be seen, they would have no problem putting it out there, even if only on their site, regardless of what Moff wanted.

I am actually as excited for this as I am for the 50th story. This looks superb. David Bradley could be inspired casting!

I'm so excited for this it's unreal! The casting choices seem brilliant and from what I know of the plot (which is very little), I think it is going to excellent. I don't even care that Gatiss wrote it.
